Installing the "Y".
Question is how do I plug the old return line.
Do I need to remove the 1/2" fitting to do so or can I just add a 3/8" plug?
what is the easiest way to remove this 1/2" plug if so. Cant get a ood grip on it with the wrench and I forsee myself just stripping it.

Remove the brass fitting with a good 6-point socket.
Replace it with a pipe plug (I think that's what was in there originally) from a hardware store.

I'd say start with the 3/8 plug and some Teflon tape or thread dope and keep an eye on it on your next outing. That might be simpler than removing the 1/2" fitting. Since it's the return port there's little or no pressure there.
