I have an 1987 mc tri star. The guy I bought it from had the key ignition hooked up wrong. Anyone know which color wires go to acc, batt, st, ign on the key ign? I have a yellow with red stripe wire, yellow wire, orange, and purple.

According to NMMA (National Marine Manufacturer Assoc.)
Orange is assecery
Purple is ignition
Red is main power
yellow with red stripe is starting circuit
yellow is alternator/generator field

What etduc posted is exactly right. I had to replace my ignition switch last fall but the two switches were marked differently.

Red wire from the battery goes to "Bat" terminal.
Yellow/red wire goes to "ST", or "START" terminal. My old switch was marked "SOL" for solenoid instead of start.

The Purple and the Yellow/red wire will be hot when cranking the engine. When you release the key to the run positoin, only the purple wire will be hot. I think that's correct.

I don't have a red wire but my orange is always hot so i assumed it was battery on the key ignition.
