Hello,

I am in the process of refinishing my swim platform. I need a couple pieces of teak lumber. Anyone know where i can score some?

Its off of a 2002 X-star. I just bought the boat and the previous owner def took horrible care of the platform. I took it all apart and sanded its all down:

Steps:
1. 50 grit on belt
2. 80 grit on belt
3. 120 grit on belt
4. 100 on palm sander

I posted pics on the 2nd page

I know that our local West Marine carries some teak lumber. You may try contacting Houston Hardwoods at http://www.houstonhardwoods.com/

Most lumbar yards can get it for you. It's pretty common for people to make patio furniture out of it

You can also try Teak World (http://teakworldenterprises.samsbiz.com/)

They do platforms for many of the boat companies, including MasterCraft, and could probably sell you custom cuts.

Try calling a local cabinet shop or millwork shop. There have been occasions when we've used teak and have some off fall.

I bought the complete 197 platform for $300 shipped to the house from them.

Other places will charge high prices just for pieces. To fix my old platform (just a couple of pieces) it was near the price of a new one from teak world. Talk to Tommy nation.

Figured it wasn't cheap. A teak transom saver ran me $70. But the fit was perfect.

So i went to the local hardwood lumber yard and showed a sanded down piece of "teak" to the manager and he was like thats not real teak its called ambrosia. It looks similar to teak just more grain and half the price. I looked at the teak lumber he had and it was very different looking than what i had.

Anyways i bought a 8'x5" piece and a 10"x3' peice for 95 dollars after tax and am very happy with the results. I will upload pictures tonight. I hope this can help some fellow MC owners out!

Here is some pics of the progress:

Picture 1 &2- before notice the missing piece at the end

Picture 3- notice the difference after the belt sander?

Picture 4- i rebuild all of the bottom pieces and supports!!!

Tomorrow i will be drilling and counter sinking holes, screwing it all together, performing the final sanding, and put a coat of 80% linseed oil/ 20% mineral spirits.

What do you guys think?

what lumber yard did you use, I too am in the northeast and am looking for somewhere to get teak in CT. I'm thinking Rings End Lumber but they might be expensive.

I used a place called hardwood emporium in Elizabeth pa. Read my prior post about which type of wood to use ambrosia looks more like the wood on my boat than teak and was half the price.
