First post, been reading and researching here awhile. We bought a '96 Pro Star last summer. 5.7 TBI, 700 hours. Previous owner says he changed the oil every 50 hours, impeller every year. I wasn't real impressed with the overall condition, but got a good deal on it and it's a fuelie so I felt pretty good.

Now I'm ready to do things my way. PO used Mobil 1. I'm going to use standard dino oil. I've read a lot of threads about oil, so whats with the 15w-40? I need a little input on weights etc. I'll probably use the Rotella.

How about a part number on the oil filter? PO used a Mastercraft oil filter. Does anyone have a cross reference for a quality filter that can be bought at a auto parts store?

Haven't seen much on the inline fuel filters, but it seems like an easy part to maintain. Does anyone have a part number?

What about capacities for engine oil and transmission oil? I don't have a owners manual so I'm a little in the dark.

I'm planning on changing engine oil, trans fluid, fuel filter, impeller, and lube up the cables. I've got to replace some ripped blower hose as well. I've read through a lot posts on pumps to get the fluids out and how to's on keeping everything clean and orderly. I need a little help with capacities and part number cross references so I don't spend a fortune at the dealer.

Thanks,

TP

www.skidim.com is a good source for parts and lots of info. don't be afraid to give them a call, they are very helpful. you may want to replace plugs and wires too. you can download manuals from here.

Manual link: http://www.mastercraft.com/knowledge/owners_manuals/

The oil capacity is listed as 4-5 qts and the trans is 1.5-2 qts.

A WIX 51069 oil filter should fit fine. I like the longer 51061. A WIX 33003 fuel filter should fit at the tank top location.

Rotella T 15W-40 is a good choice for your oil.

Here is a link to the indmar manual:

I found a great write-up on oil filters here:
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/opinions.html
The guy bought a whole bunch of filters and cut them open to see what is really going on inside. I at first bought a Delco filter for my boat since that's what the local dealer had put on for the PO. After reading that I took it back and bought a different brand.

As far as oil weights I feel that what is in the owner's manual is a bit too heavy. I know that in the years since my boat was built (1998) Indmar has changed their oil spec to a lighter oil, but I don't recall what it is off the top of my head. If you have some free time and really want to know a lot about engine oil here is another great site I found:
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/cms/

I have no affiliation with either site. I'm just a gear-head that likes to know as much as I can about anything mechanical. The oil website is very in depth and even with my college chem classes some of it was above me. Perhaps some of the members here who are actual engineers and chemists could chime in with their thoughts about the oil site.
