View Full Version : High End Slalom Skis???

I have some questions for you all. I know I am still a newbie here, and you dont know how I ski, so I will tell you all again quickly that I dont ski a course. I am just a recreational skier. I enjoy carving up the glass as good as I can. I have started to ski on a 60 rope now with the advice I got here and I love it. I do push myself to improve all the time, but I dont get obsessed either. I just enjoy free skiing slalom to the best of my ability. My question is, can an intermediate recreational slalom skier benefit from a high end ski? I have always skied on old slaloms. My main ski was a O'brien international freestyle that my dad gave me in about 1987, and it was old then. ITs probably from the late 70's or very early 80's. I skied on that until this year when I bought the MC, I bought an O'brien Siege. I love the Siege, no probs at all. but you know....your always loooking for a better mousetrap. So, at my level, would a higher end ski like a Sixam, HO, or Goode be any benefit to me? or just a waste of cash at my skill level?
To be very honest, on the "lower" end I am interested in picking up a O'brien Synchro on a closeout sale this winter. They are a bit wider and may provide a smoother ride at times when I am tired or not in the mood to really push it. I think I would like that ski at times. But I know you get what you pay for too, so I wonder if a higher end ski would be good for me....?
What are your thoughts on this?? I appreciate any and all input!! :D

OH yea, I forgot to add this too...
Whats the deal with those goofy shaped slalom skis?? they are wider at the front than the back. Whats the function?? what are they like?

As a recreational skier I would not buy a high end slalom ski like say a Monza, SixAM, Good 9600, D3 X5, F1, etc. Those skis are going to be very unforgiving in less than optimal conditions and will want to be constantly on an edge. They are built for one purpose and that is skiing the slalom course at short line lengths. I would "step down" from the highest end skis to something like the HO CDX, KD7000 or maybe CR7, D3 X4 or others along that line. Those skis will give you all the performance you need (able to ski the course into deep shortline) but be much more user friendly in the recreational world.

My $0.02 is go for it. I made the same call a few years ago, upgrading to a HO Truth after 13 years on the same Connelly Concept. I have no course access either, but a great ski makes a huge difference. Whoever you buy from, get the right ski for the conditions you have. IE for me I didn't want a ski so light and quick that it demanded smooth water - I don't get it that often. Lots of TT posts talk about wiley's at wileyski.com - take a look there -they have some deals.
Good luck !

I have a friend (novice slalomer) who bought a shaped HO Burner and pretty quickly got tired of it, not aggressive enough. They are designed to get up out the water quicker and be more friendly for newbies. When I put him on my Truth he immediately started to think trade - in .....

The Truth is another ski that is not quite the highest end. The Phantom Truth was the highest end slalom before the Monza. You are saying exactly what I am, get a nice ski but not something that is so light and unforgiving that it is a chore to ride in open water. Definately give Wileys a look. Great prices and excellent service.

I'd agree to go one level below the highest end.
With HO, I'd look at the CDX or ASX. The ASX is slightly wider in the middle and very nice to ski on. I've also heard of people on here with good things to say about the HO Mach 1.
Give Wileys a shout. They'll be more than happy to help you and know more about this stuff than most anyone on here.

I got my KD7000 from Barts a cpl of years ago for about 50% off because it was a factory blem. I could care less how "pretty" the ski is.
It won't be long before I have handle dings and such anyway.
I think you need to call and ask what they have as far as blems.

If you go to high end and want to ski in rough open water, you will probably be disappointed. The real high end stuff is meant to be on edge and tend to be unstable if you are not making cuts. Brian's comments are great. I picked up a KD 7000 from Wiley's last year and love it. The other HO's he listed are also good ski's. Get something that will push your abilities a little bit at this time, but not to crazy. Watch out for the used gear (older than 3-5 years) as the technology is always improving. I looked at a friends 99 KD 7000, same length as what I ended up buying new and hated it. Seemed very heavy and could never get the groove.

What about Goode's "lower" priced skis?? or are they still to out of my league for performance as a recreational skier?
and has anyone ever tried those O'Brien Synchro??
I hear/read alot of talk about HO, D3, Goode... all top end, very great skis, but I wonder doesnt anyone ski O'briens much anymore? just curious as I dont read too much about them here. I always thought they made a good quality ski... are they more "lower" end these days?? or not as good in quality and design?

I ski on a Goode, but it's best in the course or on really smooth water. My buddy, who is a great skier but doesn't get out very often, picked up a Synchro last year, and he loves it. It's fast, easy to ride, very easy to get out of the water, light, etc. He takes it into the course, and it's great on open water. I've skied on it a couple times for fun, but it's too big for me. Seems good, though.
My ski coach suggested a Synchro for my wife - she's just starting to work on the course. I'd recommend it based on our experience.
Hope this helps.

I have been reading for about a year on comp skis. Thinking of the Synchro also and been scanning ebay. I think my sons want it more than me, but one of them has a size 14 foot, hard to cover from size 10-14 in a boot!

I bought myself a OBrien Mapple and a Obrien Syncro for the kids.
So far, I am not too thrilled with the Mapple and it may be going up on Ebay before its over.
The Syncro is the ski that suprised me. It skis great, easy to get up on, etc. I havent taken it int o the course yet, but I can tell it will do great. Best part, I paid $150.00 for it with a nice plate binding in the front and a rear toe plate (left over 03 model).

I really like the ski. It's fast, responsive, and also decent in rough water.
I'm going to be looking at the D3's next. I'm keeping my eyes open for a deal on a Custom 4. Probably next season though.

The KD 7000 (I think CG) of a year or two ago was a really good ski to improve on. It's soft enough to be forgiving, but it will take you far. I think you want a ski that doesn't hunt for an edge, which gives it that squirrely feeling. But, I do like the Synchro - the contact bindings are very good, too.

I put lots of time in on public lakes to know what you and others have to put up with. I don't want to be thought of as a "Pond Snob" by you guys! I'm not like that at all. Hey...the D3...that is probably what I am going to be on next too. My husband loves his. His problem is that he is so damn competitive and expects perfection from himself that he forgets how to enjoy the fact that he can ski at all and has a nice place to ski at. Hence, he gets frustrated easily when he doesn't ski into 28 to 32 all the time.

Working on being consistent at 36mph 28off. PB this season is 3 at 32off. Maybe next year I will be getting into the serious shortline. The speed at 28 is awsome can't wait for 35.

A good place to pick up a decent used ski is
http://www.ski-it-again.com/php/skiitagain.php
How much you weigh, the speed you ski @ determine what lenght ski you should get!
Unless you are skiing very shortline-Stay away from the high end skis. I have harped on this before so I'm sorry if some have heard this before. Skiers generally buy way way too much ski. They see Andy Maple or Chris Parrish skiing on x ski and they have to have it. They generally bite off way more ski then they can ski. It creates bad habits and cost you your ars in the pocket book. Get a Concept, CR7, or 7000 and you will be plenty happy! I'll get off the soapbox now. I'm ready to go to the lake!

Power Slot 82,
I bought a Mapple two years ago after skiing on the same O'Brien for more than 20 years. Although I should state that my O'Brien was heavily modified. I used to ski at the same lake as Bob LaPoint and every time I saw him he would tell me to do something new to my ski. I finally decided it was time to buy a new ski. I couldn't use the O'Brien bindings that came with the Mapple since they were too hard to get into with two previously broken ankles, so I swapped them out for H0 bindings. The Mapple is a great ski but needs to be dialed in to everybody's own style of skiing. This is a highly adjustable ski and the reason I bought it (and this goes back to the original posters question) is because the concave on it and profile of the rails were similar to my old O'Brien. I don't like full concaves, never have. I like the tunnel. Some of the modifications I had done to my original ski I found on the Mapple. The literature on how it handled made me think that it would suit me. But when picking out new skis, I think the biggest decision should be made based on what kind of concave you like and then how aggressively you ski. When I get the Mapple on the right point of its edge, it is blazenly fast. In fact a little too fast sometimes at my age! Makes me want a smaller wake. And wishing I had the ski when I used to ski tournaments. The setup I ended up with was majorly different from the way it came out of the box and it took quite a few skis to get there. But now I am a happy camper.

I just skied mine this weekend. CDX from Wileys. I only got a couple sets in, since it was a big family reunion weekend with nieces and nephews galore......all wanted to toob and board. (14 hrs on the boat in 2.5 days :eek3: ) (Boat ran like a champ!! :D )
My feelings after a few sets on the CDX.
#1 The ski is full concave, when you turn it...it turns NOW!!
#2 To get comfy, the boat speed was upped to about 34 MPH. (I'm more recreational and the old ski was fine at 32MPH) The CDX seemed to sit lower in the water than my old EP.
#3 The ski felt solid in the water when going straight. Not too squirrely.
#4 The Wiley wraps are comfortable. Easy to get into and out of.
#5 Though a "high end ski" I found it to be easy to ride. Somewhat forgiving......though I know I did not push the envelop on it yet.
I would recommend it, because it is at a great price, and you can work your way into it. :twocents:

UP where do you ski? My family used to have a couple cabins on Lake Superior just west of the Sault. I've only been up there 4 or 5 times in the past 20 years, but I don't remember seeing any ski boats up there (just snowmobiles ;) ). Are there decent ski lakes up there?

shepherd,
I ski on Lake Superior. THere are two bays I ski on Keewenaw, and Huron. Much west ward of the Sault area. There are some ski boats around here. Mostly fisherman though. There are some nearby canals that have quite a few local skiers. There are also some local inland lakes and rivers that have skiers too. but not many. Most of the time we are the only ski boat out there. keep in mind, cold temps. The water temps were still in the 50's until just recently. We ski with wetsuits all the time.
so if your willing to get up at 6 am to hit the glass calm lake or wait until 8:30 pm to get it, its a nice place to ski as its not crowded. You must be willing to deal with the very cold temps though. We skied in May and it was so cold my feet went numb by the time I got in the water, put on the skis, and got up. Brrrrr........
But, all in all, its good. :) Just no ski shops to try out skis :(

If your moving in the right direction, I don’t think you could make an “unwise purchase” of ski equipment. As a matter of fact when I bought my new ski this year I was looking for a particular ski that I was 80% sure I was going to sell on ebay when “the ski” came along. I got lucky and “The ski” came along first. But you could be in and out of a ski for about the cost of a demo ride..

Mark's right. There's no right ski for everyone. Ebay is a viable alternative to demo'ing in my opinion if you don't have a local shop with a good demo program, in which case you'll be paying for shipment of a demo ski. My wife and I each bought one ski that wasn't the perfect fit for us. I was out about $25 for my "demo." We broke even on her first try at a new ski.

Its hard to jump ship when I have been an O'brien fan for sooo long. I dont know why, I just have always liked their skis. But I got to try to keep an open mind here too. THere are other great ski mfgrs out there today.
so I will have some thinking to do...............
O'Briens are good skis.....problem with me was that the Mapple only went up to 68". The ole EP was 69". I did not want to go down in size. You have the option, Wileys still has 68" Mapples, and 68" CDX's I think. Buy em both for the price of a new F1, Monza, etc and Ebay the one you like less.......thats not really off the wall when you consider the price of an F1, HO Monza, Goode, etc, etc :D

Just a little note on the Mapple. If you don't no how to tinker with the fin, you may have trouble getting it dialed in. That's why I ended up selling mine. It was great at first, but I couldn't ever get it to work from a predictable standpoint. I stil think it's a great ski though. Just my $.02.

That is what I am doing now. Using the sheet that came with the ski as a guide. I may be old and grey before I get it dialed in for me.

good point Doug, you know.....I havent even tried tweaking my Siege yet..... :o I know, I know. I should. Any ideas? I suppose I could try shifting the binders forward or backward a notch. or moving the fin or the little wing on it. Where do I start first? anybody got any advice on that? Maybe I can dial that in where its better suited to my tastes too
I will tell you that for the price, that HO CDX has really got me interested at Wileys. Are they a good place to deal with? I got a good qoute on a CDX with an Animal front and a RTP bindings.
What else can you people tell me about Wiley's, the HO CDX, and tweaking my Siege??
Man!! am I bad, or what?? I am just picking all of your brains. You know, I feel kinda bad, I mean I am able to get so much info from all you fine folks on this board, and I dont give back much. I have been skiing for almost 20 years, but dont have anywhere near the wealth of knowledge about it that you people do. I hope I get the chance to offer you all some help sometime and return the favor :)

If you don't know about messing with fins, don't just try to wing it (no pun intended). Even if you do, always start with the factory recommended settings and go from there. Start with the bindign position first. Then mess with the wing if it's on there. Then adjust the fin. You'll need a set of calipers to do the fin. Somewhere in the past I posted something about what different fin settings do in a general sense (not that I've felt compelled to mess with mine (see rule #1). For the CDX settings, contact Eddie Roberts at HO or Matt Rini. I used Matt's recommendations to set my boots up. My instructor checked them at ski school and said "you can't get 'em much closer to stock than that." Thus, my skiing was the problem. ;)
I've got nothing but good things to say about Wileys. They are top notch!

I checked Wylies web site. Great pricing, even with exchange. Anyone in Canada use them, or is there a Candian equivalent.

Man, I wasn't even considering buying a new ski until I started reading this thread! ;)
Sounds to me like Ebay may be the place to check first -- check out all you guys' rejects.
And what's with the Monza? It's been a long time since I've been ski shopping -- I've never seen a ski that expensive! Can it be worth it? (probably not for a lowly amateur like me).

we got you thinking now too!! Ya know, I am so confused about this now. There are SO many skis to choose from. I dont know what to do.... I am leaning toward that HO CDX now..... we will see.
I think I should buy a new prop first seeing I already have a nice new ski (Siege) and I could use a CNC prop more I think. That will give me time to really get "into" my Siege and have something to compare the CDX to. Whatcha think?

Hey, why can't I find any info on the CDX on HO's website??
Its not in their brochure either..... a friend of mine picked up a HO brochure while out of town and gave it to me. I find NO info on the CDX anywhere.....
Hmmm.... why is that  ?

I saw that too and inquired as to why. Wileys came back to me and said that HO did a special run for them in late 2004.
Here is the thread I started on the same subject.

Just FYI, from my conversation with HO HQ last year, the Jobe Edge Graphite is the exact same ski. Same mold, same layup, etc. You might check the Jobe catalog.

I am now in the market for a D3...just got the bindings in from Wiley's and I don't like them. Sent them back with a big SORRY. So, I'll ski my KD7000 with a bad boot (not in a critical place) and look for a D3. B

My buddy just got an X5 off of ebay. I think he told me he has about 6 into it with bindings (RTP). I could ask him tomorrow to be sure???

Think tomorrow I'll hit ebay up and look for the D3. I want high wrap double bindings with open toes. Not too picky am I? B

I have to throw in that I absolutely LOVE my Goode 9200. Full Concave and I feel it is more forgiving than a tullel ski.
If I ever come across a Goode 8000, it may end up in my garage though. That was one fun ski! Didn't like the chop like my 9200 does though.
I bought mine 2 years old a couple years back for $300.00 with bindings. Best money I've spent on ski gear so far.

That was one reason I didn’t get the Wiley’s , (open toes)
