View Full Version : Review of skins from Mastercraftskins.com

New skins just arrived from The uphosteryWorkshop (aka www.mastercraftskins.com) out of Weatherford, TX.

The boat....1987 ps190. The skins....driver seat, rear bench, and observers bottom cushion. It is the grey base with the navy and aqua trim. The navy and aqua appear as an exact match. The grey is not available anymore. The substitute vinyl color is nearly identical, but the texture in the fabric is subtly different. They did advise me of this before making the skins and sent pictures of the two fabrics side by side to see if it met close enough. Cost $480 shipped. About 8 weeks from the time I shipped them out until I got them back.

The quality seems outstanding. My wife does some curtain and lighter upholstery. She inspected them and admitted that the craftsmanship looks impressive. They certainly appear to be as high quality as OEM that I removed.

I'll get to fitting them as soon as I get a stapler that can handle it. Pics when the snow/freezing rain stops.

yep, would really like to see the pictures, including your installation process. My '04 X2 rear deck is showing some wear around the seams and wasn't sure how to go about replacing them on something that old (my MC dealer said '04 skins no longer available OEM)...

I'll have only the rear bench cushion pic tomorrow, the other pics won't be until next week.....waiting for a stapler to arrive :o

I figured, pics of them just loosely sitting on the floor won't help much, but i promise to deliver the pics as i get them done....in between work and boat shopping :)

SWeaver

a few pics of the rear bench cushion. Once i get the stapler delivered, I'll post more pics as they are finished. The stitching looks stressed in the up-close pic, but it isn't, it fit perfectly.

Well, I finally got some time to finish the seat skin installation from mastercraftskins.com....
The rear bench looks factory new! the observer seat is also fantastic, as are the 2 cushions in the drivers seat. The actual driver seat has a couple ripples by the shoulders. Not sure if that is installer error, or if the sizing of the skin was slightly off, but that was as good as I could get it.

The guys at mastercraftskins were great to work with and the prices were great. A local boat shop wanted about $2000....this cost me $500. Maybe it didn't come out as good as they would have done, but I am very happy with it.

SWeaver those look awesome. Especially that rear couch. I don't think it would have looked any better had a pro done it. I think those wrinkles in the driver seat will relax too. Nice install.

Thanks. Total install time was only a couple hours with a pneumatic staple. With the exception of the drivers seat wrinkles, the results were surprisingly good considering I've never done skins. Highly recommend for older boats!

Sweaver, thanks for posting the picture and providing details on the re-skinning process.

I have all of my skins off and ready to ship to Chris at mastercraftskins. This all was a result of your post. My 2001 Maristar 230 is in great shape other than the interior seat skins and rear hatch skins as they are all cracking. So this upgrade should make the boat look like brand new again.

I do have one question however, hate to be picky but I noticed that the stripes on your seat don't precisely match the corresponding stripe on the back of the seat. Is this just the picture? Or was this like that on the skin you send down for them to use as a template? I wanted to ask as I will be sending all of my skins down to Chris this week.

Also did you use a steamer and heat gun as suggested by other posts? I'm trying to sort out what new tools I need to purchase. I found a nice pneumatic Paslode 20GA stapler at my local HD yesterday. I've got a heat gun and I was wondering about the steamer.

Regards,

SWeaver

Fentong, so glad I could help you pull the trigger on new skins. It did wonders for my old ps190.
Regarding the stripes, they all line up perfectly, although in the pic, the cushion wasn't centered on the bench, and the bench was slightly angled for the pic, giving the appearance that the stripes were off. They arent though.

I didn't use a steamer or glue gun, just the staple and was careful to pull the vinyl with a little even tension. The vinyl is tough and won't rip easily. I'm not sure what the steamer or heat gun would do differentntly....as long as the skins are warm to indoor temp when you staple them on, but I've read that some people used them.

SWeaver, thanks for the reply and I'm glad to hear that the stripes line up and you are happy with the result. I'm also glad to hear that the material is heavy duty and should last for a few years.

Fantastic, now I just need to take the skins off my rear hatch covers and get it packaged and in the mail.

Does anyone know whether 20 gauge staples are equivalent to Arrow T50 style staples or are they heavier? The staples that were used at the factory are very light, but great quality as they were all intact with no visible corrosion although I do realize that they are stainless. I would assume these factory staples are 20 or 22 Ga.

SWeaver
02-06-2011, 03:35 PM
Not sure how t50 compares to 20g. Can't help you there. But, I will say, the skins took awhile to arrive....so if you send them in mid Feb, you may not get them until may, so I'd get going if you plan on getting out early season. Although maybe they're quicker this time of year. Mine took about 3 months or so but that was over the holidays and they had to find special fabric to match.

02-06-2011, 06:09 PM
Fentong: Not sure the T50's will resist rust and corrosion, I would double check this if I were you. I've never undertaken a project like this, just my 2cents......

SWeaver: Great work, those look awesome thanks for sharing!

don't guess you have pictures of the finished skin install into the boat?

we took our boat ('04 X2) out last Friday and I noticed the skins starting to crack at the seams in a couple of spots on the rear deck. was thinking of contacting "mastercraftskins" to see what just the three rear deck skins would cost (and how long it would take). I should have taken notes a few months back when this originally was posted... I might prefer to wait until end of season to not have any down time.

I had my wife call them yesterday to check on replacement skins for the rear deck panels ... but she didn't remember what the specs / year was on our boat ('04 X2) ... but she was of the opinion we would wait till the end of season (late fall) to not have any down time (since the season is already upon us here in Central TX)...

Have any of you ever done replacement skins yourself on similar rear decks? I haven't taken the time to look at ours in enough depth to determine if it's something I would take on.

Was it hard to get those off of the seats and backs? And did you decide to go with the original type vinyl or the new billet stuff?

cpr05xtr
03-19-2012, 09:32 PM
The only piece that was hard believe it or not was on the sundeck pieces because it is stapled into alumnium. Other than that it was cake. Im going back to original mainly because i can only afford to get some of the panels done and dont want to have a boat that is half and half. Im getting all the seats in the cockpit area redone including the driver seat and all three sundeck oh and the long rear backrest and they quoted me rite at $1100. SO im going to do the worst panels this spring and get the rest done next winter.

vandit0022
03-21-2012, 12:36 PM
Well I don't have a sun deck per SE but I suspect getting the back rests off will be most difficult. Keep us updated when you get them back. I'm curious as to turn around time and quality. I'm thinking about next years tax refund for this project. They quoted me a pretty good price for the new style skins.

Wondering if there's any chance they saved the old skins or made templates for the work they've previously done on other boats? I have a buddy with a 90 PS190 who wants to have his skins redone. Taking the skins off and sending them in at this time of year is probably not an option but if they have templates I'm sure he'd order them.

03-28-2012, 04:27 PM
i asked the same question when i started working on my boat this spring. they do not have any templates. i was told that due to slight variances from boat to boat, seat to seat, etc., that the only way they could do it would be to have the skins in front of them. i'm with you, it would be a lot smoother for the end user if you could just order a pre made interior and install them at your leisure to minimize down time.

i sent mine in around the first of march and i was told about 2 more weeks on monday.

I guess the economy is so good that nobody needs any addition business. This is the 3rd shop I have approached to get a few new skins and not one has replied. I'm self employeed and if someone emails me a request for a quote or some work, they will hear back from me same day, even on a Sunday!

For a month I have been trying to get a few skins for my personal inventory so if the sun deck gives way some day I'll have the inventory in my barn. No luck yet!

I do have a compete set of decals for my boat. I want a back up combing pad and sun deck though badly.

We were planning on sewing up our own upholstery on a '91 ps190, but if it's only 5-700 bucks for a complete set of skins I'd definitely consider that. I just emailed upholsterworkshop@yahoo.com, so we'll see if I get a reply. The only problem is that the seat cover of the rear bench and viewers seat were "re-upholstered" with some plain white material that looks awful. How will they be able to make skins for those since they aren't the factory design?

Wow...those seat bases are ugly!! However, the rest of the vinyl looks to be in good shape...why are you doing all the upholstery when it looks like yiu just need the cushions??

My guess is the bases would cost about $125 ea. Maybe a picture of what they are supposed to look like will get someone close with the new ones??

Call around to some of the skin makers...they may have patterns from previous jobs done on the same model.

A local shop can make a pattern from the the actual cushions.

The seats look worse in person. They're starting to crack and some of the seams are coming apart, so they're showing their age. I emailed a few places that people recommended on TT, and so far I got a response from Copycat Upholstery. They need pics of every piece (we're just doing the seats since the engine cover and sides are still pretty good) and their dimensions, so I'll do that this weekend.

I take my entire seats to them in the winter that way the wait never really matters but if you talk to them they will work with you. I mentioned I may need the front two seats done but didn't want to wait and they said they could have them in a week if I brought them in. I have nothing but good things to say about this shop.
