My boat didn't come with a stereo from the factory only the cutouts to add speakers. Where is the best place to mount the stereo? i bought a Sony cdxm 30 if it matters.

If you don't want to cut your boat you could do something like this.

From what I have seen you might want to consider this....

Most music if you dont get good radio reception on the water, who does, comes from some sort of I pod. So why buy a radio that has small knobs anyway when you can just route a signal to an amp from your MP3 Device and save the cost of the radio unless you want a CD player or FM reception.

This way you can just have your cable exit somewhere near the dash and just plug in your MP3 player when you hit the water. I plan on going this route.

The other option is hide the radio under the dash out of harms/waters way and just buy a radio with a remote control. Mount a bracket for your wireless remote somewhere on the dash and wala it doesnt really matter where the stereo is.

Just somethings to consider.

interesting thought, how would you control volume and adjust tone with just an amp? I have already bought a receiver, amp, and 4 speakers. Just trying to get some ideas since it doesn't have anywhere obvious from the factory.

I have seen this done so I would assume via the Ipod it self or some amps may have volume control similar to a bass knob for a sub.

I am trying to keep the cost down, my music in one place, and one less hole in my boat and have researched a little bit. There is someone on here that has done this I just cannot find the thread. Hopefully someone will chime in soon.

I use my iphone to listen to music when in the boat. I use a head phone to rca cable to the amp from the phone.
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2290564&filterName=Cable+type&filterValue=Y-adapters

I also had to use two more Ys to split that cable to the front and back channel for each side

I set the amp's gain for the loudest volume the speakers handle and use the volume controls on the phone for the rest

I would be interested to see what you have going on with your cables when you get a chance.

Ok, get an amp, get teh speakers, run the speaker wires to the spreakers and the amp. run this http://www.jensenmarinedirect.com/jensen-1-8-auxiliary-input-jack.html to the amp. Get a hole saw, drill a hole through the fiberglass.....going backwards. Get a double sided audio cable. Plug one side of cable into the Jport and the other into the ipod or whatever device you will use. And done. You control the volume from the ipod. http://www.amazon.com/PIE-audio-video-charging-cable/dp/B001KM778U/ref=pd_cp__1 you could use that as well if you want to charge the ipod while playing it

Wow, what an easy set up. I guess your limitation is in your adjustments on the head unit but I think I will get one just to compare.

There are also a handful of bluetooth options out there (here is an example of one (http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F8Z492-Bluetooth-Receiver-iPhone/dp/B0035JL35O/ref=sr_1_15?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1294930938&sr=1-15), but little research by me to figure out which is best). I have thought it would be pretty cool to be able to just pass around the ipod to anybody in the boat and they could control the audio from any seat.

Nice find. A real lifesaver to us guys with minimal opportunity to place any sound equipment in the boat that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

Nice find. A real lifesaver to us guys with minimal opportunity to place any sound equipment in the boat that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

I thought I'd revive this thread, as my early '90's SuperTuner finally died this weekend on my '89 Prostar. I had just installed Polk Dxi 650 speakers (4). The stereo was mounted just below the mirror, and the cutout was the two-post style.

Any new head unit requires a DIN cutout...much larger and there is just enough room to make it work. The older splash protector will probably work too, but just barely. The newer splash protectors are all too large and will not fit. Rather than cut more material from the boat, (and I'm a little worried that this really close fit might not, which would require more cutting, and general ugliness) I'm thinking of covering the current holes with black acrylic which will have a Mastercraft or Prostar decal on it.

My thought is a simple/clean solution - eliminate the head unit and just mount an amp under the bow with provision for i-whatever wired in to the amp, or maybe bluetooth.

Anyone done this and happy with it? Pictures?

Thanks,

Jack
