I have a 2002 mastercraft tandem axle trailer and I'm having an issue with the wheel/axle. I pulled the boat out of the garage and after I turned onto the street, I noticed smoke from the wheels due to the tire rubbing on the fender. The brake caliper is mounted onto this splined shaft coming out of the axle, and it is allowing the tire to go up until it hits the fender. When I jack the tire up, I can pull the caliper/wheel hub back down where it should be, but when I release the jack, it goes right back up. It sounds like rubber inside the axle when I turn it. I'm assuming this whole spline assembly needs to be replaced. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if MasterCraft made any trailers with torsion suspension, but that is what it sounds like. Do you have leaf springs on your trailer?

No, it seems as though this is the only form of suspension. I have had the boat for three years with no problems, so I have no experience with this type suspension.

It sounds like the rubber is shot inside your torsion system. Google "rubber torsion axle trailer suspension" and you will be able to learn how it works and what it will take to fix it. I have leaf springs or I would be able to tell you more.

Mastercraft has been using torsion axles for the last bunch of years. My trailer is old enough to have leaf springs so I have no experience with your issue. Someone will be along shortly to give you the answer you are looking for.

Your repair is probably going to consist of buying something like this.

I am not sure if MasterCraft used Reliable axles or not, but I have heard that brand mentioned regarding the oil bath hubs.
They only come in pairs so they will match up, you don't want a new one on one side and an old one on the other.
Hopefully yours bolt on, so you won't have to weld them in place.

tsp0176 - I had the same issue and the torsion axle had failed. I see you are in the southeast, where exactly? I dealt with my dealer and they got me an axle at a reduced price as it is a known issue for the 02 trailers.
The axle can't be repaired, so it is a replacement job. Not hard, just a little time as it bolts on to the trailer.

I am in Alabama. Mine doesn't bolt on, it is spot welded on four sides. My nearest dealer is Rambo in B'ham. I plan on calling them today to get some quotes. Hopefully it's not too expensive.

Rambo is who I dealt with but mine was bolted on. Great guys at Rambo, good luck.
