throttle maintenance

I'm getting ready to repaint the throttle housing in my '85 s & s. can I remove the stick and the knob that takes the boat out of gear with out messing up the assembly inside? (springs clips etc)

Good question, I was going to do the same last year. Once I took the assembly off the boat and saw the internals, I decided to leave it alone for the time being.

Depending on what you find out here, I may take back off this fall and paint intact by masking the entire area and covering all exposed parts of the boat with a big drop cloth to catch the overspray.
