Am planning on putting new pin stripes on boat this fall. Any advice on installing new pin stripes over existing ones? Existing stripes are on damaged in a few spots. Will new ones stick to existing? Am also going to buff and polish gelcoat. Will stripes hold up to mild buffing and polishing?

I'm no expert but why wouldn't you want to remove the old pinstripes??

They are only scratched in a few places. I was hoping the gelcoat buffing wouldn't damage them any more. Then I would replace small sections of striping (2'" or so) where required.

I still don't understand. I understand you patching in damaged sections. But I wouldn't lay new stripes over old ones.

I wouldn't try to insert short sections of striping, particularly over old scratched sections. You run the risk of colors not matching exactly and you'd have to be a surgeon to get the joins to be invisible.
What width of striping are you needing to do? The 1/4" stuff is easy to get and easy to apply if you take your time and use guide marks or masking tape.
