Will a distributor from mustang work in 86 351? I have a 1986 prostar 190 and was going to convert to electonic ignition and then I thought maybe change the whole distibutor? Cars had electonic ignition since the mid 70s. Does anybody know if the distributors will interchange?

Yes it will work so long as you don't use the vacumm advance. It may not run stellar as the timing advance will be different on a car but it should be ok. Only way to know for certain is to give it try. Do realize it is not a Marine Distributor so there are safety risks with doing this

Remember to run that blower EXTRA long, and be careful of sparks!

It will not work, unless the Mustang you pulled it from also has a 351. Those cars, except for a few special Cobras and a few in the 70's had those engines, most just had 302's. The 351 is taller than the 302, thus making the distributor too short for your boat. The other thing you need to understand is that the auto distributors are different then one's designed to work in a marine environment. It's all about spark control and corrosion resistance. Just get a conversion kit from somewhere and it's only $100 and is easy to do.
