Here is what I do...lube it with a little soap and water...set the kill switch so that the engine can't start. Bump the starter and the impeller will usually move out a little. Then I use two long, thin flat blade screwdrivers to pry it out....a little at a time.

Others have used can openers instead of screw drivers.

Also, if you use anything to lubricate the impeller, make sure to get it off before storage. I always throw it away and replace it annually.

good luck!

Just for clarity's sake, he's talking about paint can openers.

Spray some WD-40 in the pump housing, turn the motor over a few times and grab the impeller with a pair of channel locks and it will slip right out.

I screw a deck screw into the rubber part, around the hub, then grab the head with a pair of plyers and pull.

Yup, the WD-40 works every time for me.

You shouldn't have to say this, but don't grab the impeller while you are turning the engine over. I watched a guy change out an impeller on his old 78 S&S and then he tried to check the belt tension with his fingers....while it was running. It wasn't pretty.

No need to lube it up...she won't care. Just take 2 needle-nose pliers grab slats on opposite sides of each other and give them a tug. Pops right out. Then when you go to put it back in, put some white lithium grease on the shaft before you slide it in. Easy Peasy Japanease.

Almost. It's not too bad as the side panels beside the engine come outand I do have room to kneel beside the engine.
