Guys,

I'm looking to set up JimN's contraption for running the boat on my trailer:
- disconnect hull intake hose from raw water pump suction
- connect new piece of (1.25") hose to raw water pump suction
- stick other end of new hose into 5 gal bucket

I have a couple questions about the piece of hose I need to buy:
- is 1.25" ID hose the right size for an '02 X-Star?
- what type of hose do you guys use? radiator hose from an autoparts store?

Thanks for the help!

Not sure on the size, but I'd get a suction hose so you don't have to worry about it collapsing if the engine sucks a little harder than the hose can push

It's not a contraption- it's a gizmo.

I always disconnected the hull side from the oil cooler unless that was after the raw water pump and I use clear vinyl hose so I can see if/how well the water is flowing. Home Depot and other big box stores sell it. I also prefer to use a container for the water that's larger than 5 gallons because the raw water pump can draw a lot of water when it goes to high idle, but that will work for short RPM increases. It should be 1.25" diameter.

Gizmo... Got it.

The transmission cooler is after the raw water pump on my boat, so I'll put the hose straight to the suction side of the raw water pump.

So that would be 1.25" inside diameter, not outside, right? Just seems big...

I would measure it if you have doubts. I use a 1/4" drive swivel-head ratchet wrench with a 4" extension and 5/16" socket for the hose clamps- Harbor Freight has the ratchet if you don't want to spend $40 for the Snap-On version like mine (DOH!).

BTW- it's not my method, it's the way I learned to do it when I started working at the dealership.

This is the method i use and it works great,
One word of caution though.......your motor will empty a five gallon bucket pretty quickly even with a garden hose on full. If you run your motor at more than idle for even for a few seconds that bucket will be empty in a hurry! Your motor flows a ton of water.

Clear vinyl tubing works fine. I don't even use the reinforced variety. I pull the hose off the south end of the transmission cooler and hook it up there. Tighten the hose clamp down tight. Come to think of it, it works on my new boat, and its raw water hoses are 1". So I wouldn't sweat the OD versus ID stuff. Just clamp it down good. Yours are 1.25".
