Anybody got thoughts on removing the rubber exhaust (the one from the silencer to the manifold) off the silencer? Mine, on a 1989 PS appears to be absolutely stuck. I have tried a vice, soap and water, everything short of cutting it off - very frustrating.
One of those little things that ends up costing you 5 hours of torment....

Cut it off. It's not that expensive to replace

I think I worked a butter knife between the two to get it started. Once I got it started, it separated easily much like a radiator hose.

Work a butter knife(or screw driver), between rubber and silencer. Pry open slightly, pour in dish soap. Work knife/screwdriver around silencer, adding soap. It should wiggle off.

I used a screw driver and a light synthetic oil. I would pry open--add oil--move to another spot. Did this all the way around. Left sitting over night with oil soaking into it. It almost jumped off the next morning.

Here's another take on it:
It's not necessarily about getting the old hose off but as well, getting a new stiff hose back on while trying to cut-to-fit without doing a little work, but as well, a logical step of preventative maintenance.
Path of least resistence (from my recent and past experiences with the hoses).
Order a new piece (or both sides) from skidim.com (order the soft-sided non-wired hose).
Order two riser-to-manifold gaskets as well
Order 8 new riser bolts / washers
Remove the riser, cut the old hose off, and put in new ones.
Trying to fit in a new piece of hose without a loose end (the riser being off) is nothing but a headache.
Take it or leave it but that will prevent the 5 hours of torment. :)
While you're at that point, order enough hose to put in new replacements on the other end of the silencer. The soft-sided hose is very easy to cut-to-fit with a box knife. Be careful not to over-exert a cuttung motion, as the knife will slice right on through the point of where you had (not) intended to cut.
I can only suggest replacing both hoses. Have a look here at the inside of the hoses after several years of use. Scroll through to a few pics I posted.

Funny - I did it yesterday - you mentioned 5 hours - yep - that was it. Fuel tank had to come out - I also recommend having WD40 on hand to aid in the installation - for whatever reason, once you get that stuff hooked up all in line - it is a nightmare to trying and gain or loose a little to balance it out. Thanks for everyones help. What a pain in the butt repair!!

If it's the inline one, giving the muffler a good twist made it pop right off in our case.
