Other than taking a screwdriver and putting it in the spark plug wire and holding it close to the spark plug and testing for spark, is there another way to test a coil on a small 2 cycle engine on a weedwacker? Can it be tested with a volt meter?

I have a cheapie Craftsman weekeater that I just cleaned out the carb and replaced the gas line and now it appears it has no spark. It was running fine a week ago after I rebuilt it....now nothing.

http://www.ehow.com/how_5981269_check-ignition-coil-volt-meter.html

Just used this method on a 20HP mercury outboard. Compared the two coils using this method and one was bad.

Also, we found the motor and model number online and the primary coil resistance ranges were listed.

Good luck.

Take it down to a shop and they'll have a tester to test it. Kind of an expensive unit to buy for home use

Yes it can be tested with volt meter, set the meter on ohms attached negative lead on plug the other to ground, spin the flywheel see if ohm range changes, if it does the coil is still good. Hope this helps

Thanks, I'll try that tonight when I get home.
