Hi,

I have a 1980's stars and stripes and the starter turns the engine over no problem sometimes and other times is really slow and i cant start it. It seems like the starter is loosing power but the battery is fully charged and is showing close to 12v. It starts everytime off the water but when it has been running in the water for about 20 mins it wont start again. Any ideas why? Thanks

Check your timing!

thanks very much, pretty sure its the timing after reading a few more posts. But how does the timing affect the starter turning the engine over?

Hot engines cause starter drag when the timing is off. Never considered why--always just timed engine.

You may want to check the solenoid also.

Very simplified............if the spark occurs too early (timing too advanced) while the piston is still coming up on the compression stroke, it will want to push the piston backward - but not having enough force as the engine isn't turning enough RPM's to do that, the outcome is to slow the cranking speed that the starter can produce.
