Does not having the electric choke hooked up cause a problem?? It seems like if any it would be starting problems. I'm having running problems.

Not sure bud. All kidding aside Mark just had a problem with his electric choke and replaced it. He might know.

I fell for the edelbrock hype a few times myself, and never again (and not because I moved to EFI). They say they are more durable and easier to dial in because the only gaskets are above the floats, so they won't flood out. Nonsense, never again. I have to ask, where is the holley?

Hey Jeremy, do hook up the choke. How do the idle air mixture screws look up front? They say they are pretuned out of the box and for the most part mine was. Do you think you might have got a return where someone had fiddled with the mixtures? Just a thought.
Truthfully I am happy with the Edelbrock, after getting past having the wrong carb on the boat I like it. I will tell you the top end of mine is better and the mid range is sweet but DEFINETELY the Edelbrocks throw down more fuel than the Holleys

Jrandol,
What is your top end? We just got rid of an 85 with a holley 351 Ford, before I had it tuned up it started rough and got 35mph tops. Had the holley tuned to perfection(not myself I must add), started instantly cold and hot and got it to 44mph with only carb tuning. And used less fuel. We have a 91 with almost the same results. I guess sitting for a season or more really gums up the internals and throws everything off.

With 91 Octane I can go 52 mph on GPS. I wouldn't recommend those speeds all day long, this thing is squirelly as snot at those speeds!

That’s good to hear. I wish I could have helped but I’m not a carb guy.
So you got it all cleaned up and ready?? Bring the camera..

No Edelbrock is ready to go out of the box. You have to understand that they build these carbs for a multitude of engines, not just a Ford 351. It is not that hard to tune them, it just takes time and a little understanding. My Edelbrock 1409 was not ready to go out of the box and it ran very similar to what you are describing. 2 things that are very important with this particular carb, fuel pressure and float adjustment. Both are easily adjusted, and as far as part throttle driveability, that is fixed with some jet and rod changes. I can absolutely state that my 1409 runs flawlessly on my boat. The reason it runs this way is because it is specifically tuned to my application. I wouldn't have any different. You just need a little patience and understanding and I am sure that carb will work for you in the long run.

That is really fast for that style boat.

Yep, it's good times!! :headbang: I am contemplating building a nastier motor for it this winter, nothing overly crazy, probably 400hp range and seeing what it will do. Goal would be to get a motor that will spin comfortably around 5500 rpms.
