View Full Version : Vibration/noise coming from steering wheel

Since my boat was new (new X7) there are times when I get a little noise/vibration in the wheel. Specifically, when I throttle up to pull up a skier when the wheel/rudder is turned a little to one side or the other.

Also, if I am at a stop, cut the wheel hard, then throttle up (like trying to get back to a skier that is about to get ran over) same thing...its like a vibration/noise that can be felt and heard about a foot behind the wheel.

If I had to guess, its just torque from a lot of force going against the rudder, and that the most abrupt turn in the cable is right behind the wheel so I feel it there.

Just want to make sure that its normal. Is there a way to check play in the rudder? Anything else to check?

My 209 does sort of the same thing. I was told that the rudder turned can create an air pocket between the prop and the rudder which causes a slight noise. The one side of the rudder is closer to the prop when turned tight, so this also may cause a different noise.

I was alarmed by the same symptoms and was assured all was okay.

I'll bet you are fine. Not a lot of money, but maybe ten bucks.

Just kidding.....You have no worries with this.

I mentioned it to a guy who was driving my boat, I asked the very same question. He responded by "nailing" it and saying "you mean that?"
I said um .... yeah.. He said that is perfectly normal and is typically my indication that I need to "mash it"
