View Full Version : 351 manifold selection?

I am planning to pull the motor from my boat this winter to pep it up. I orderd a hei system and was thinking about putting a performance intake manifold on it when I get the heads done. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

I suggest the Edelbrock Performer 351W Intake. A great compliment to the 351W set-up especially when coupled with GT-40 heads. You can really feel the performer intake's better breathing in the mid-range rpms. As a side note, you need to be cognizant of the spacing under your doghouse as it is a tight fit with a Edelbrock intake. Anything with much more height will not fit without also getting a shorter airfilter.

BY THE WAY- what HEI distributor did you get. do you mind telling me what you paid for it and from where as well. I need to pick up a new distributor for my set-up. You cannot get the original parts for my distributor anymore and my advance springs are about slap worn out.

I just bought a brand new Edelbrock Performer 2181 on Ebay.Ended today. Check ended auctions for details. I purchased a used one locally from a MC friend who had one in his garage. I paid $125 plus $12 for shipping for the Ebay one. I was planning on relisting it on Ebay or posting it here in the "Market" section. If you want it I'll be happy to send it to you for what I have in it. $137. Send me an IM if you're interested. They are $199 new.

I went with a full msd ignition system. Marine distributor, spark box and blaster coil. Look on ebay! i got a swinging deal . The other option you could go with is the pertronics conversion if you are running a points distributor. I think skidim carries the kit.

I converted my distributor a long time ago. The problem is that you cannot get individual parts for it such as the mechanical advance springs without buying the whole conversion kit. You may also want to check out your local listings for an automobile swap meet or car show. I picked up my performer at a local auto show for $100. It was just like brand new. I know you said you got the whole HEI system. What model distributor did you pick up.

The distributor is a 83506 ready to run distributor. It is supposed to be pretty close to a plug and play setup. I know. Mallory also makes a marine hei distributor. The reason I chose the msd was the mallory runs bushings instead of marine sealed bearings.

I do believe that msd # 83506 is for the 351C, 351M, 400, 429, 460 engines and not the 351 windsor engine.
I went with the weiand stealth manifold its almost the same as the edelbrock but i didn't have any clearance issues.

For the price of GT40 heads, you can find GT40P heads from a 5.0 explorer, they have different port design, plug location and smaller combustion chambers to bump the CR. Clearwater Cylinder heads have GT40P heads for really cheap and you know they are right. You always risk it when you get something from the junk yard.
As for the intake, the 2181 performer is a good intake.
The cam in the Indmar 351W is much larger then in the automotive world.

Speaking of heads other than the GT40P, is anybody going to a aftermarket solution like the Edelbrock Performer heads? At under $600 assembled and with good flow numbers it seams like this would be a good option. If the wallet is a little fatter, one could upgrade to the CNC ported version as well...

Performance comparison of the CNC heads to the GT40 heads is in this article (http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/hrdp_0901_edelbrock_xt_cylinder_head_install/index.html)(warning vehicles with tires). The rear-wheel HP gain at 4,600 rpm with heads only is small, but with an intake 15 hp, and with a cam 20 hp is gained. Max gains (at a higher rpm) are good for 54 hp. Sounds like the non CNC may be similar to GT40P.

the top end flow numbers may be close to that of the GT40P's but what are the low speed/low lift flow numbers?
this is where you are going to gain a lot under the curve...

the weight savings would be nice...

I agree, the low rpm flow is going to be similar, from what I read most of the major gains are achieved over 4,600 RPM, will not do us a lot of good. I had not looked at Clearwater as you recommended until now, man that is a good value. Now that I see how inexpensive ($155) the GT40P heads are, that looks like the way to go. If I ever get the itch for more power, now I know what to upgrade.

I paid $400 for the pair of gt40p heads. Love them and will not give them up. If you can pick up a set for $310 jump on it. Save your couch change over the winter and buy a cam and lifter set, along with a timing chain and gear set.

It's more better for you:D
