View Full Version : Holiday Idiots - Another Death

With all due respect to the two dead, *** were they thinking?

We generally lose one person a year on the lake. Nobody died last year, so we lose two this year. Most (all) of the time it's a stupid F* stunt, and this year was no exception. Hot 4th, typical holiday weekend that finds most of the ski club no where near the water. In fact my next door neighbor didn't understand why I was waxing the boat, but I digress.

Apperently these two geniuses were near the sand bar, drunk, and we had a pretty decent sized thunderstorm show up, that gave us almost an hour's warning it was coming. When the storm finally hit, they went running for the boat and got in water over their head, oh and did I tell you neither one could swim? and btw, they had spent all day drinking.

STUPID STUPID STUPID!

It will significantly cut lake activity, probably for the rest of the summer. Bad part, lake patrols will be paying even closer attention to drinking, which still wouldn't have stopped these deaths.

Dying makes for a really bad day, but people need to think more.

More tough news.
If you can't swim, stay away from the water until you learn!!!!!!!
I am fully convinced that "booze" causes much more harm than it does good.

I know but around here it is religously known as the "Drinkin Thread!" I remeber it well. I believe you have removed most of those early posts! Back on topic, I saw more people stumbling down the docks and one fall into the water this weekend. I understand population control but it does bother me that these people just crossed water that I was on with children. We lost one over the weekend as well and divers were out when I returned to the docks. Alchohol? The deceased did fall off of the dock though.OK, OK, it says, it's time for "A drink" my friend! ;)

He only posts when he needs to pad his cushion or when he is having "female issues!" Lately it seems he has had more of the latter so he has no time for us any more. We still need to plan the "TRIP" this year. Looking forward to hittin that S & S. Maybe you can get a picture of me adjusting that flag! :D Ok my friend, and if Mag even says hi to me again, we will "do it" this season!!! ;)

We had to go back home on the 4th. While i was sitting in the water waiting for my dad to back the trailer in, there was a clan of people sitting right in the middle of the launch drinking it down. My dad managed to sneek the trailer around them and into the water. As soon as the drunkards saw this, "Nice one jerk, we were in line." I really wish that peole would take driving a boat as seriously as driving a car..

Bob; Sounds like the guy at Geist just had a heard attack and dropped in the lake. Really unfortunate to go that way.

I still think a Friday would be great for the trip. Cannot be too late or else my lake is liable to drop to a sea of mud! Right now it is great and during the week it's pretty nice (for Indiana). I'm in CA for the next two weeks again unfortunately. After that?

I know he complained of illness but news reports were very vague. A life vest (rarely worn) may have saved his life. My kids always ask if they can go vestless on the dock. I always respond no. The best swimmers can't swim if they fall and get knocked out. I am a little paranoid I know. Only kids I have! Even at 40 you wonder when it could happen to you. My dad had a stroke at 46. The man that died at Geist may have been better off with a vest or at least someone else along with him. I will admit I hate the things. Friday (a Friday) sounds awesome. I know your schedule is tough but we are still out every Wed at 6:00 am. We need to plan a Friday afternoon along with a Saturday morning.Bob; Sounds like the guy at Geist just had a heard attack and dropped in the lake. Really unfortunate to go that way.

What's a USGA life jacket? I thought USGA was United States Golf Association (of course, the way I play golf I need a life jacket because I spend so much time in the water looking for my ball). USCG maybe?

Certainly not to make light of the deaths. For the first time in quite awhile I didn't hear of any local drownings this past weekend (thank God). They are almost always someone who had fell off a boat or tried to swim further than they could, and typically "alcohol may have been involved". Our favorite lake has started posting buoys around the lake with a marker on the top indicating where someone has died. It's tragic, but a pretty good reminder to be careful.

2 people, Alcohol, boat.............It never mixes.

What absolutely floors me is that they could not swim.......but, ya know when some people get in a boat their collective IQ's go to sh*t.

I take being on the water pretty seriously, since 1 accident is all it takes.......it galls me to think that people like them think that being on the water is an excuse to party.

Darwin is with us everywhere looking for a chance to weed.

Yeah, not smart.

About a month ago there was a newly engaged couple out around midnight on a lake here in Central Florida sitting in their boat about 200 yards from shore when a young group of four took off from shore in a ski boat and ran them over. He was injured and the woman ended up being killed.

This was pretty tragic because the boat that got run over didn't have the proper stern light on. The girl driving passed a sobriety test and no charges were filed last I heard.

Also, one night last week three fisherman capsized their boat and one didn't make it to shore. I don't think any of them could swim very well and I believe they had been drinking. The boat they were in was around 12 ft - very small for three adults...not a good idea if you can't swim.

Geeez, I was almost on the other end of this one last summer. We were cruising up the Sammamish slew at like midnight, coming out into open water, I opened the boat up & just as we got on plane........ some guy turned his lights on right in front of us.
I couldn't believe he was sitting there in the dark, just waiting to get hit.

Had a weird incident over the weekend here. An older guy on the dock had a heart attack & went down. One of his buddies jumps from a pontoon boat to the dock to give him some help........ breaks his leg. Another buddy on the beach jumps over a bon fire to run down the dock to help...... 3rd degree burns on his feet & ankles. Needless to say alcohol was involved. And apparantly Darwin took the wrong guy..... the heart attack victim died while the two smart guys live on to tell the tale.

Funny how that works..

Thankfully, its been pretty peaceful at my local ski lake.. all real courteous people.. never met an idiot or someone who was a jerk out there.. its nice :)

That almost happened to me a couple years ago. I was driving a big 28' twin engine Formula cruiser down the Potomac River at night, heading for the bridge in the main channel. I had just got on plane and hitting around 30 mph when a light suddenly flipped on in front of the passage through the bridge. Some guys in a small fishing boat just floating there in the channel. They almost got chewed up by a couple big stainless props.

One thing that really bothered me was that I had a couple beers (maybe barely over the legal limit). I bet alcohol (and me) would have been blamed on that one too, and not the idiots in the darkened boat in the middle of the bridge channel at night. :(

It's Philpott Lake, near Martinsville, VA. It's owned and maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers.

On Center Hill in Tennessee, a person suffered a compound leg fracture this past weekend when he/she was hit by a jet ski. The amazing part is that he was hit while skiing. Two girls were reportedly on the 'jet ski.'

It was the worst that I have seen on the lake since the mid 70's. It seems that everywhere I turned there was a deckboat doing circles pulling tubes....

We even had jet skiers pulling tubes that stopped when our surfers fell so they could continue to follow my wake.

neighbor's relative knew the dead guys. Apperently several people encouraged the use of floatation devices, life vest, noodle, etc, but they were too macho.

I was also wrong about not having a death last year, it was a suicide, so not sure if it counts.

Some of the more memorable ones
this year is an obvious darwin winner
last year - suicide
two years ago, fisherman dives overboard to retrieve his dropped rod, and no he couldn't swim either
other years
jet skier turned so hard he was thrown and broke his neck
fisherman out overnight, heart attack falls overboard
high school kids fishing in november wearing parka's in a canoe

It's almost getting rediculous with stupid deaths.

Just saw the local patrol idling by the house at 9:30. They've talked about increasing late night patrols, but every single incident, but one has happened in the middle of the day

THis lake is big enough to make hitting a bullet with a bullet a real challenge. Really too sad but most of the people on the jet skis do seem to see much around them.
