I have a 1988 prostar 190 put it in the water after being out for several years. Is taking on water, checked the stuffing box appears ok. How should I go about checking for the leak?? Bilge is coming on every 40 mins. What should be the procedure??
Thanks

did you check the stuffing while you were running? If it is good then....throw the boat in the driveway and throw a hose in it and see where the water is getting out...

Check exhaust and exhaust hoses. Check rudder. Check raw water hoses.

is the water in the bilge hot or warm to the touch? mine had a petcock leaking but only notice when I felt the bilge water and found it hot, tightened it and problem is gone. I could hear the water streaming in when the engine ran after it was warmed up....

STUT BOLTS, RUDDER, STUFFING BOX... If its not one of those you have a bigger problem..

taking on water when just sitting!! Also when I made a hard turn the other day it seemed to come up from the center rear and come out from under the rear seat.

x-2 for the rubrail, although if you are taking on while just sitting that obviously wouldn't be rubrail. I had a similar issue, would get worse at low speeds / high RPM. I kept checking around shaft, but turns out it was rubrail on the corner. very small opening, 5200 did the trick.

Went and checked the boat today. It appears to be leaking at the base of the stuffing box where the fiberglass mat makes up the shaft housing. There is calking there and it appears to be coming through that calking. Any ideas for a repair??

Can you see any visual cracks from the bottom?

Sounds like the boat may have had a prop strike at one time that was bad enough to crack the area you are talking about. A good fiberglass man can fix it up for you.

Not a good idea to do power turns when you have water in the bilge. Been there, done that.........

When do you take on the water? Just sitting there or more so at certain speeds?

I just replaced mine in my 91 prostar. It's about a 20 minute job and very easy job. You need to have two wrench able to go large enough to loosen the lock nut. I bought the virtually dripless from skidim tightened the adjusting nut as tight as I could by hand, locked the lock nut and was good to go.

water was coming in when sitting. It is coming in at the fiberglass at the front of the shaft log.

can you take a picture and highlight where it is coming in?
