View Full Version : Now I need a Trailer

I was towing my '06 X2 back from the lake Saturday and the left wheel declared its independence and took off down the road. The trailer hit the ground and is likely a total as it ground the axle assembly down, blew out the fender, brake rotor is tore up, and the wheel is messed up. It is a 2001 Mastercraft single axle.
Can anyone put me on the trailer of a good used trailer for my boat? I am not going to pay the crazy price the dealers in the area are quoting for a new Mastercraft trailer.
Thanks, B

Any pics??? I would imagine a little work from a machine shop would be less expensive than a new trailer? Pics would help with that though.

Also, if you have decent insurance, I would guess you can have your existing trailer either repaired or replaced for the cost of your deductable,
I would check with the dealer. The factory has a field full of trailers that are a couple of years old. I was able to get mine for about half the cost of a brand new one. There is nothing wrong with them at all. I ordered it and it came out on the next shipment to the dealer. Glad I did it.

Well, I called American Boat Center (Mastercraft dealer) in Knoxville and got a quote for over $5k!!! Holy $!@#. They did mention they could get me a BoatMate trailer for around $4k. All of them single axle. That is ridiculus.
I will call Memphis Boat Center about that used X2 trailer tomorrow when they open. I am also going to check with Rambo Marine (gotta love that name) in Huntsville, AL too. They have some used/repo trailers.
I filed a claim with SkiSafe and have a bunch of hoops to jump through...it gets better. I for some reason only insured it for $2k. Oh well....I have to get pics and an estimate to them.

New axle should cost less than $200 + Labor. See if there is a trailer supply place in town. Call them and they will know of a trailer repair shop or 2.
New fender should be an easy fix too. Brakes, upgrade to some modern disk brakes for a few hundred.
Unless you bent the trailer frame repairing it shouldn't run $1000-1500, may be $2K at the most.
Good luck!

I had the same thing happen to me and my 205. Because I had a skid wheel in the back, only my drum assembly was trashed. I also broke some studs on the other side of the trailer as well.
I replaced both hub assemblies (drum, shoes, actuator and bearings) with brand new ones. I also had to replace both rims as well but overall it didn't cost $2k.
Here is a thread on my fiberglass repair.
http://www.mastercraft.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=35541&highlight=fiberglass+fender+repair
I didn't submit a claim and did it out of my own pocket. I do think I only have about $2k on my trailer as well. I put more of the dollars on the boat (stated value, replacement cost policy).
If you are not comfortable with that, I would be patient and find a used trailer. I don't think you need to spend $4k to get something decent back under your boat.
Good luck.

I saw a single axle MC trailer on there a few days ago. Good luck.

Exact same thing happened to me a couple of years ago on the trailer for my 2000 Maristar 210. I turned it into insurance and the insurance company totaled the trailer and paid for a new one (minus the deductible).
I got a quote from the local MC dealer and the price was very high on a new trailer coming from TN. I contacted another MC dealer out of my area that purchased trailers from Sport Boat trailer company out of CA. Short story is that I was able to get a nice custom tandem axle trailer for less than a single from TN.

Got a call in to my contact at Hustler Trailers to get a ballpark price. I'll let you know when I hear something. Sounds like you're close by.

I'd personally rebuild it baring that there was no structural frame damage. I really enjoyed the rebuild on my '96 and am looking forward to "customizing" my '07 when it comes time.

Unrelated to why the wheel fell off......what 01 trailer works with a 06-up X2? Did you modify the bunks for the newer style hull? Just a general question because I've seen a few questions in hte past on here about which trailers are compatible with different hulls.
Haven't looked much recently, but remember seeing several MC trailers for sale in FL when I was looking for a new boat last year. Try Bay Area Watersports, Jim BAWS here on the forum.

Thats funny Thrall...I bought my boat from Jim.
The bunks seem to work fine. It is a MS210 trailer. I had to have the front part where the boat latches modified to take the boat.
I actually have gotten the trailer "servicable" at this point. I replaced the ubolts and studs on the rotor/hub. Not pretty but will get me through the season.

Exact same thing happened to mine coupla years back. Scared the bajebus out of me and the family. No bote damage tho.
She rides on a custom TANDEM axle now courtesy of ski safe insurance.

Please lets claify. The trailer that is under ROCKETS boat did not come from Bay Area WateerSports. This was under his 2004 X-9 and it was decided for cost reasons that he keep his old trailer with the 2006 that he purchased from us
Just so it is a little clearer

I have a 2004 Mastercraft Prostar 197 trailor that is being fixed as it is getting new fenders, tires, and a brand new axle as I had some problems a few weeks ago heading down to Tennessee. This one is in great shape, and will be like brand new once I get it back. Call Michael at 248-620-6003 (Clarkston, MI) if you have any interest!

It's interesting how often I hear of people losing a wheel when trailering. It happened to me as well, towing a buddies EZ Loader and his beater-runabout..(no significant damage to trailer hub - or boat) .....I learned the hard way to never trust someone else's trailer!

I had to replace an axel on a 2005 trailer. The axel with brakes came to around $1000 before labor

If you can't rebuild check out these guys in Ft. Myers http://boatmastertrailers.com/index.php/boatmaster-trailers-home I bought a 30' custom aluminum trailer for a 26' SeaRay about 8 years ago - tandem axle, brakes etc all for about $2500 delivered to Atlanta. You need to have it delivered to a place that has a forklift so they can unload it - they deliver them by stacking them up. Great quality - although we only use it to put the boat in and out of the lake I would not hesitate to go cross country with it

I have an 05 197 trailer - needs a passenger side fender (or someone good with Fiberglass)and a little work on guidepoles but running gear, bunks, tires, axles, etc are fine- priced to move...
