she will not start, but a little starter fluid, tries to hit

Are you sure it's not a '99?

Do a search here- there are literally hundreds of posts about the in-tank fuel pumps.

If it is a 98, the fuel pump is external.....at least it is on my 30th, 1998.

Haven't seen any threads in the last 3 or 4 years on fuel pumps for our boats - which is a good thing, I think, but it does mean that we don't have cross-reference information on aftermarket pumps.

And, yes, it's an external fuel pump, not an in-tank pump.

Try checking fuel pressure at the injectors - should be a pressure valve that you can depress with a screwdriver (with a rag to catch the fuel) to see if the pump is generating any significant pressure. Perhaps it's just a loose electrical connector for the fuel pump?

As a way to get a rough idea of fuel pressure, that's OK but 10 pounds will spray a lot and it's not more than 1/3 of what it needs.

The connector can, and does, become dislodged, so I agree that this should be checked.

The fuel pump has its own fuse and relay, next to the ECM. These are easy to check. Also, the fuel pump's ground is at the rear of the motor (not the end with the crank pulley). Make sure it's clean, tight and the terminal hasn't come off.
