Lake Don Pedro was a zoo as I suspected over the Fourth of July weekend. I suppose every lake was like this though.

For starters, got to the ramp about 10:30am. Four lane ramp and naturally two bozo's had their wives or girlfriends or whoever holding their boats on the two inner lanes next to the docks while the guys went and parked their rigs leaving two lanes to launch. Backed my wife in and while she was backing out, another guy decides he is going to try to come in and dock behind one of the other bozos, my wife tries to avoid him and in doing so, bumps one of the original parked boats with our swim deck. I suppose it is her fault even though there was plenty of parking space to the outside of each dock where the other boats could have tied up while waiting. By the time I got back everyone was gone. Oh well, no damage to our boat and it didn’t appear to cause any damage the boat she bumped. She’s nervous putting the boat on and off the trailer as it is, so by the time I got back from parking, she was ready to give it up.

Get out of the 5mph zone and there are boats going every which way with no consideration to right of way rules, so I am basically doing a zig zag course. We finally find relatively calm water to wakeboard/ski and then the tubers show up pulling their tubers within 50 yards of us and our skier in the water. Our orange flag was clearly visible.

Later in the day, we find a nice quiet spot and put a skier in. The shore was less than 40 yards to my starboard side with 300 yards of open water to the port side. No less than 4 boats pulled a tuber between us and the shore threading the needle. Needless to say there will be no more holiday weekend boating for us! It is unbelievable how many inconsiderate a*@ h^&*s there are out there…

Exact reason we don't ski on public lakes anymore! Got tired of the yahoos out there. We even have a few on our private lake but only have to deal with them once in a while and the rules are pretty clear to all of us on the lake. Sorry you had such a terrible time on the Fourth. B

I had the same problem yesterday and saturday. Crowded boat ramp, full of idiots who would either prep and load their boats while being backed into the water and still on the trailer or park their trailer in the way of everyone else. Then all the water was good for was...well, basically nothing, way too many boats breaking way too many rules, being wayyy to inconsiderate. This weekend it felt like no wake zones didn't apply to anyone, and the water was so rough from all the boat traffic i might as well have been boating in a hurricane. However we did manage to have some fun really early and really late in the days. But if i had to do it again... i wouldn't, i'll stick to the land for the next fourth of july weekend and the rest.

GRRRR. That frustrates me to no end. Come on ladies. Learn to drive either the boat on the trailer or back the rig up. It is really not that hard. Just takes a little practice.
RackAtak I am feeling your pain. Our launch at Berryessa has maybe 3 slots. And then the yahoos leave their boats parked on the launch side of the dock. (I got into a little "spat" with someone not to long ago about that). Your story reminds me again why we don't boat on major holidays. It sucks to see the boat in the driveway, but it really is not worth the hassel.
IMO alot of the inconsiderate ones that you see out there on the big three summer holiday weekends are the people that only take their boats out 3 times a year and don't have a clue to what they are doing.
WOW. I feel so much better after my rant. Thanks RackAtak for the opportunity. :)

Ditto, ditto, ditto!!!!! Out at 6 a.m. and the Yahoos are already there! Not pulling, one person on the boat and 25 MPH in the ole party barge! I will propose a ski only and a idle only zone for the area I ski. We have no rules and very few experienced boaters. I have said this before But Ohio used to have very distinct rules regarding boating when I lived there. The Scioto river had a Tow Zone, an Idle Zone and a Pandamonium Zone for all of the idiots! Fish in the Idle, Ski in the tow and do what ever in the other. All lakes/rivers need some sort of "Can't we all get along" regulation. Love the people that drop and stop at the ramp. I just push them back with my boat and trailer. At that point it is "Ramp Rage!" Pull to a slip! The ramp is not for repairs. If it does not run fix it elsewhere or burn it! Lake Don Pedro was a zoo as I suspected over the Fourth of July weekend. I suppose every lake was like this though.

Same at Greers Ferry. We pulled the slalom course on Saturday morning, stayed off the lake, reinstalled it today and actually got calm water until 10:30 or so. We thought most of the crazy people would be gone....we were wrong as they began to flock in at 12:00 into the cove. We kept three boats anchored in the course, had a few incidents with a couple of sea doos, huge Coblat A$$hole who wanted to run through the course with his kid. We told him a deposit of $500 and it was all his, then I pulled up a boat guide with 3' of 5/16" chain and said. "This is what your prop gets if you steer wrong while trying to watch you child and drive, as you have no observer". Yes, he left.

I'm fortunate that we live on a lake, so we never have to fight the jams at the boat ramps. We put it in on Memorial Day and take it out some time in September/October. Ideally, anyway...yesterday, I had to take the boat out for fuel pump replacement. I got it out early enough that there was no one at the ramp, but putting it back in at 4:00 was a zoo.

However, our lake was jammed with boaters and jet skis the whole weekend. The jet skis in particular are annoying, especially when you get one that does nothing but follow, criss-crossing the wake (illegal). Our lake is only patrolled sporadically by the Sheriff and/or DNR. Usually, we don't get too much traffic on the 4th, but this one was amazing.

At night, there's a pretty spectacular fireworks display from one of the public beaches. There are easily 250 boats parked in that bay for the display, and when the show's over, it's a madhouse. 250 boats trying to get out of one bay in the dark. It's not so bad in a big boat if you can keep from being hit, but the overflow of our family that's up for the 4th takes the 14 ft Whaler. I've never done it in the Whaler, but I'm told that THAT is a wild ride.

RackAtak,

I happened to be in Livermore, CA on Friday afternoon and saw how many boats were heading over the Altamont Pass and into the valley this weekend. For that reason, I decided to leave the boat parked in the driveway the whole weekend and concentrated on the Barbeque in the backyard instead. As frustrating as it is to leave the boat idle in the driveway, its not worth taking the boat out and having to deal with the simple minded individuals that head out on the long holiday weekends. Anyways, Don Pedro should be back to normal next weekend, so keep your head up.

X2momma, sorry I am going to have to disagree with you..99% of ALL women are born without the "backup gene" in their DNA.. More divorces are started at the boat ramp than anywhere.. ( well, except for building a house shortly after getting married).. Again notice I said 99% as I have seen SOME women that were better than most men...

For some freakish reason the ramp went really smooth, off and on, at my usual lake.. Usually a group of morons but I honestly think I slid inbetween them.. The guy with the 32' cabin cruiser ( remember this is a small Oregon lake) had me worried but he did pretty good, although his tire ( two wheel drive) spun half way up the ramp....

Same general story here. Lots and lots of idiots on the lake. We never tried to ski or tube (4 yr old prefers this to skiing right now). Even parked in a "quiet" bay in an out of the way corner and there were a few close calls by the morons with their overloaded boats and a tube at the end of the string.

And whether crowded or calm, why does one wally need to anchor their boat right down the middle of bay. Off to one side or the other, one end, or at least off center...

Where I primarily ski, the fishermen are pretty good. They may hang in the turn-around on one end, but not in the middle. This weekend, even they seemed to stay away.

We had a great time all three days from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. After that the drunks woke up and we went back to the house. Sunday my wife and I went for an afternoon cruise on the SeaDoo. We were barely safe dodging the tubers and other PWC's (and what is it with pontoon boats cruising down the left side/middle of the lake?). Can't imagine trying any boarding/skiing in those conditions. Also, I can't understand how people can unleash their teenage Sons and Daughters on 60 mph PWC's without any supervision. I almost feel sorry for them. They have no idea what sort of machine they're dealing with. Complete maniacs, but what teenager isn't. It's up to the parents! Anyway, holiday weekends we're up with the sun and get our runs in early. The rest of the day the lake is useless.

For some reason it seems that people who never boat any other time of the year come out on holidays. In fact, some holidays you wonder if there's someone intentionally renting runabouts to people who can't pass a boater's safety course, just to watch the mayhem. I stayed away from the lake this weekend, did some work around the house, cleaned the garage, played in the 8' inflatable pool with my wife and son, cooked some burgers, made homemade ice cream, watched some fireworks, etc. Much lower on the stress level.

I also went over and washed and waxed a friend's PS190 while he and his family were at the beach. He's helped me out a lot with some of my "construction" projects, so I thought I'd repay the favor (I also have a few more that I need help with ;) ). Besides, I hated to see it looking kind of ignored. I even pressure washed, sanded, and oiled his teak deck. It all turned out great.

It's the friggin' idiot olympics on Mem'l Day, 7/4, and Labor day.

We went out on Saturday and Monday. On the water by 7 AM. Tore up the glass and cut the fog off the water. Back on the lift by 9:45 AM. Ate BBQ, drank beer, and built a retaining wall.

All in all, a great weekend. Didn't have to deal with the idiots.

On a sad note, I saw a 93/94 prostar 205 being towed by a john boat. Of course, he had it good compared to the air nautique our neighbors saw being towed while the occupants frantically bailed water out of it.

Hope everyone had a safe weekend.

All-in-all we had a good weekend. Aside form the storms.
There were plenty of id-10-t's out and about, but our little cove with the course stayed fairly free of them. We had about 5 run-ins with river turds thinking the course was an obstacle course built just for them. We also had a river turd pulling a tube that ripped off the gates to the course. That was a pain pulling up the course, starting from the first boat gate to the start gate. Actually it was a pain for my wife. :D She was getting ready to ski when the morons came by us and tore them off, and well since she was already in the water I let her do the dirty work. :)

Past 2 July 4th weekends, we have skipped the lake.

Same reasons you all outlined.

The 3 timers (memorial, 4th, labor day) who see fit to toob on the boat all day and drink beer like its water, then drive a boat like its a car, weaving through traffic...those are the people who really scare me.

The family and I actually just returned from a week in Gulf Shores, AL.

Good for you Momma
I got one of those 1%-ers and she's better at trailer backing than some of the boys!

As far as public lake follies, I wear my skipper hat and when other boaters fail to give proper respect, I give them the Hawaiian good luck sign!...and we go from there...

With my attitude, the best thing is to NOT put my boat in the water on holiday weekends. Just let the animals have it.

I usually sit on shore on the holidays except for early morning and late evening.
Had to make an exception yesterday as nephew was home from military with his new wife. He was frustrated as he was rusty and couldn't get up on one and had to drop one.
........ some kids on a PWC stole the drop ski.........

They did bring it back after we spent close to half an hour looking for it.

Gotta get your water time in before about 10 or 11am around here, then the water conditions go to he11!

After years of fighting the ramps, I figured out that shared waterfront was affordable & a lot less aggravating. The last two places I've owned have been a 1 minute walk from the water, my own boat slip, ramp, etc. Get your skiing in early, then park the boat & go find something else to do the rest of the day.

As for the women..... guys, start workin with them. My wife has gotten pretty good at backing the trailer in. Last summer we went to the Spokane River in Post Falls for a change of pace. The ramp there is really only 2 lanes, but plenty wide enough for 3. With 2 yahoo boats on the ramp screwin around, she stabbed the trailer between them, I casually drove the boat up the trailer despite some b1tching by one of the guys, the Boat Buddy locked & she pulled out. We pulled up to the staging area while Johnny Law went & had a little talk with the jerk on the ramp.

A bit of excitement on our lake this year. Just prior to the fireworks, our neighbor is blowing shells off over the water..... and the sheriff. So while he is chatting with the sheriff, a guy on a nearby dock keels over with a heartattack. When people around him figure out he's dieing, one guy bales off a pontoon boat & breaks his leg, and another guy tries to jump over a bon fire & burns his feet & ankles bad. So while the fire dept is tending to these three (the heart attack victim died), the real fireworks show begins. 10 minutes into the show, one of the mortars explodes right on the barge, setting off other mortars. End result: 2 guys hurt with burns & concussions, end of show.

I believe most women have the backup gene but it's hidden deep down inside them. My wife hasn't found it yet, but I encourage her when she tries to back down -- I guess I'm an optimist. Key to saving the marriage -- patience and encouragement at the boat ramp ("No, you did fine honey..." :o ). Also, she's my driver so I have to be nice to her. ;)
In her opinion, any woman who can't help out at the ramp doesn't deserve to be there. In my opinion, if she looks like Angelina Jolie, I might let it slide... ;)

Well we had just a big time at the lake this weekend. The wife cut her leg on a jet ski lift that is not being used and just laid up in a gazebo so we got to visit the emergency room. She couldn't walk for the rest of the weekend or get in the water. Thank god for the golf cart.

As far as morons, I had to break out the air horn for several "boaters" this weekend. When they were doing something stupid and could affect me they got the horn.

Yet the biggest winner of moron of the week goes to azzhat on the pontoon. I am over at the slalom course in the back of a cove. He is loaded down with passengers. Boat is idiling through the course assessing what needed to be done to reattach the buoys. As he drives by I give him the customary wave, because I am a nice guy, well he gets this #h*% eating grin on his face and starts to go around each buoy like he is running the course. I was stunned. Well after he got to the end of the cove and turned around he did it again. Had I had my shotgun I believe I would have eliminated one of his pontoons.

We're big on waiving, too. What surprised me was the real lack of return waives we got this weekend. We started laughing about it after a while. When it was a ski/wakeboard boat we decided that not waiving back would result in their having lots of rollers for the rest of the day. When it was a fisherman, we decided that not waiving back would result in few if any bites.

Worked for us. We waived and we had uninterrupted glass the whole time we were out.

Uh yeah, pretty lame isn't it! I may have got some guy in trouble actually. I asked the ranger if the 20' limit was still be inforced, he said yes. 2 minute prior a MC 205 unloaded at the ramp and he had HVL stickers. I think the tape measure came out for him. Even though he is an MC owner I can't say I feel bad for him. The only way he could have gotten it on there is if he lied about the length or bribed the officer. We all gotta play by the same rules!

I couldn't agree more. The lake was full of day trippers that only show up on the major holidays. Brains were left in the car for sure. In spitre of it all I heard of only one accident on our lake. It occurred sometime in the dark hours between Sunday and Monday. A couple of guys driving a IO too close to the shore put it on someones dock. Completely out of the water, on the dock. They should be thankful, the dock saved them from meeting the boathouse.

Wish I had a photo of that one.

Idiots everywhere...and WAY too many boats for the size of our lake. We got up early and rode the glass for a couple of hours then came back and watched the craziness from the deck, where it was safe. So we really weren't effected that much...

But the morons with the fireworks was a different story...When they started shooting them across the lake in the direction of my boat, I got a little upset!!!

My wife can do all of that Rick and yes she has a sister that lives in Wyoming. But, she is pretty mean. Her x-hubby came home one night drunk and shoved her. She hit him and broke his nose and orbital bone. We call her "Big-Sue" she has played 1st base on the All AF softball team multiple times and puts it over the fence consistently. She's about 6'0 185 solid.

I hate to say it but the only bad thing about the lake this weekend was the heat. Hottest day in 2 years. Last time I try camping and boating on the same weekend. I did lose my impeller on the night of the third and on the fourth I was lucky enough to find the coolest boat shop in Texas. We were out at Kimble bend on the river, he is out on a county rd right behind the park. If any of you river rats have not been there hit me with a pm. You will be shocked at this guys place. I am a customer for life.

My only complaint for the whole weekend were the JET SKIIERS! Historically I've been very accepting as they have lake rights too, same as fishermen/gals. Unfortunately the idiotic ones totally out way the respectful ones!

Only a lawyer would spell it "waive" :D

Sorry Rick. One is already spoken for and the other is to young. I will keep my eyes open for you. Any other qualifications I need to look for beside just the "back-up" gene? :D :D

Our lake while private was still pretty nuts. Several Jet boats (the old school Berkely jets) thought it would be cool to pull up the trim and shoot 200' water jets out the back on other boats behind them  and the good ole tubers flinging their tubes near the side of other boats. I'll tell ya, it's a wonder no yahoos got hurt!
More than a few years back we went to Cumberland with a few other families and rented a houseboat. No MC then, so we had a Sea Ray and a jet boat.

Needless to say the Jet boat was loud and fast, 454, Panther jet drive. The owner saw fit to drive up to the houseboat, turn around, and floor it. He soaked the boat 3 or 4 times, shot water through open windows, etc. Sadly, he got a kick out of it.

Best thing that happened was that his alternator gave out and the boat sat for half the weekend.

Momma, I would request a nice woman who tries to keep in shape and who doesn't come equipped with enough baggage to sink the Titanic again.. One who likes to boat, ski, enjoy our company together, likes to ride on the back of a harley... I would request one like this, but there just don't seem to be any out there..... Rick

Sorry, Rick. The gene is specific to my wife among the women of our family. None of them can thread the needle with that boat trailer like she can.

We put in at Seven Points on Percy Priest(public lake) @noon on the 4th, parking lot was ALMOST full, the wife dumped us in and we were pulling away from the courtesy dock within minutes. The lake itself was packed, as expected, but we had no intention of trying to ski.
We rode out to a cove to tie up with some friends and didn't move until about 6:30. Trailering the boat was as flawless as launching.
All in all a good day, even if we left the sticks at home!!

Man, you got some major cahones to go to Preist on the 4th....best idea was just tying up....hope you had some good bumpers.

We are at Center Hill and have found out that the tying up part can be tricky too as the deckboats with tubes come within 75 feet and that wake rivals my X-Star wake....woosh

We're Center Hill folks as well, good to hear from ya. That's only about the 5th time we've been to JPP this year; we usually trailer up to Edgar Evins about twice a week. we don't do much tying up at Center Hill because monday-tuesday are usually when we are there and basically have any or all coves and creeks all to ourselves!!
We live in Hermitage; Priest is 6 minutes from my house and we can be launched at Evins in 58 minutes from the driveway. non-boaters are like "why do you drive all the way up there?" you just can't explain it, so i don't try to. that's why they are non-boaters, huh?

Ouch, an hour to get the boat in, one way? Guess even after 14 yrs of ownership, I'd classify as a non-boater. Or I'd move closer to the lake.
