My carb bowls are really corroded inside. Going to replace carb.

There are some companies that sell rebuilt ones on-line with a warranty for a couple hundred bucks less than a new one.

What's the thought on buying new vs rebuilt?

Thanks!!

I am not afraid to save money on rebuilt but I don't want someone else's junk. Depends on reputation and recommendation.

No problem with rebuilt if it's from a good source. For that matter save extra $$ and rebuild yours.

I used to be a pro mech and I would always go with a new carb over a rebuilt from persoanl exp. You would not think it would matter much but my exp has been that new carbs always run better. In the end it depends on the core they used and the quality of work on the rebuild. You cant see most carb wear.

Also, get rid of the points if you still have them.

It shows accelerated corrosion of Holley carbs due to manufacturing defect. It may apply to you, and you may seek compensation from Holley.

I had an '87 with a carb and the carb just gave me fits. I paid to have it rebuilt once and it was good for a while. Then I took on the job myself. I discovered that the throttle plate was slightly warped which was causing a vacuum leak. I replaced almost every part of the stupid carb while rebuilding. It cost far less than buying a new carb and it ran great. Great if you consider that every time you turn the engine off after a set and wait your turn the silly thing would not restart without some serious hand and arm coordination to pump the gas just right while cranking. I could have avoided three years worth of grief by purchasing a brand new carb for my 20 year old boat. My two cents.

2nd vote for rebuilding it yourself unless there's a better aftermarket option over the OEM carb.

Thanks for all the input.

Called Holley and told them of the problem and that the fuel bowl was corroding. I asked them with the corrosion if I could rebuild and if it would continue.

The tech asked for the carb numbers and then told me if I send it back they will send me a new one. The build date was within a time when they were having casting problems and they corroded prematurely. No questions asked. I was floored. In reality they didn't need to do anything, this is a 4 year old carb. What an example of amazing customer service and really standing behind their products.

On a side note this would be a major problem with the re-builders if they are not aware of this issue and continue to rebuild carbs with this problem.

for reference, can you list what year you think your carb was manufactured?

Sounds like it will work out for you.

I think it was manufactured June 2006.

Pulled the carb tonight to send to Holley.

Here is a pic of the secondary fuel bowl. This is after I did a quick clean a couple days ago at the dock just to get it running.

It's amazing the zinc bowl is corroding like crazy however the aluminum body and other parts seem unaffected.
