Everytime we go out on the lake, I have black smut on the transom of the boat, I've skied, wakeboarded behind my boat and other MC's but they all smell about the same it only seems to do it when in idle or picking up a skier? I have been to the local dealer and he scrathes his head. The motor is the 350 EFI, and I've watched him plug the computer up to it and go through the specs no less than on 5 different occassions. Anyone have ideas?

How clean is your flame arrestor? If that's dirty, you won't have enough air getting in to burn completely, especially at idle.

O.K. what is the flame arrestor and where is it?

It is the air filter, and it has an extra feature to prevent backfire thru the carborator/fuel injector.

Not sure if you have TB injection which has a small air cleaner under the top engine cover...or if you have a conical filter on the front of your intake. You don't have paper like cars, you have screen mesh, usually of aluminum housing with stainless mesh, which prevents sparks, if your engine backfires. I ususally sit mine down in some gasoline and hit it with a small toothbrush, in and out.

Make sure that all your areas of air intake on your motor box are clear too. Towel drapped over the back is a big no no while underway, and make sure the front vent hoses are hooked up to go into the engine area because in a simple sense, an engine is a big ole air pump.

But think of this too, better rich(unless you have terrible MPG) than lean, which is where you burn a valve or piston.

I have the same problem. I have just lived with it by wiping it off :twocents:

A motor should be looked at as an air pump. If the intake air isn't sufficient, the motor will never develop power at its peak potential.

I have looked at the flame arrestor, every year I do clean it twice a season. However I didn't think of the air vents etc being diverted or clogged. That's a good place to start. I'll have to take my boat apart however, because it doesn't have vents along the side for fresh air intake so I'm not sure where it's supposed to get it's supply. If you are familiar with the V-205 everything is tight, there's zero clearence (actual rubbing has occured ) in the underside of the sundeck for the spark arrestor.
