My 86 pro star goes max speed about 41.5- 42mph with a 14x18 3 blade @4900-5000 rpm. I would like it to go about 2mph faster for barefoot. What propeller should I buy - thanks Rocco

I weigh 215 and 38 - 40 mph is a plenty. Not that you're wrong in saying you need speed. It just seems that you're looking for a hot speed.

I suspect you have the 351 with the 1:1 transmission. You're winding it out at 5k RPM.

Eric is with OJ Props. He's very knowledgeable about props and would be able to recommend the correct prop to use.

yes 351 with 1:1 @5k. I like to step off at high speeds and then slow down to 40. I am not that good so faster the better even for 1 foots.

Look on the prop and see if it says "1 1/8", better yet measure your prop shaft and see if it is 1 inch or 1 1/8 inch. I'm not the expert, but the 14 X 18 prop is for the powerslot transmission which is 1.5:1 and a 1 1/8 prop shaft. If you are reaching 4800-5000 RPMs and only getting 41 MPH you need MORE pitch on the prop to get more speed and lower the RPMs to around 4400. Just make sure you know which transmission and shaft you have before calling OJ.

I can barefoot at 38 put I don't like to go less than 40. I only weigh 185 lbs but at 38 MPH the wake is too soft behind the boat when doing wake crossings and it's harder (for me) to do one foots and to cut.

It doesn't add up to me. I don't see how you can be turning a 14d by 18p prop to 5000rpm on a 1:1 transmission and only get 42mph. Without getting out the calculator, it should be more like 62mph if those revs, prop and transmission are true.

Call Eric.

As said before, something here dosnt add up.

If the boat currently has a 14 x 18, chances are it is a powerslot (1.5:1). At full throttle, it should run about 4500 rpm @ 45mph with that prop. There is no way a 1:1 could trn a 14 x 18 prop and get to 5000 rpm. If it did, it would need a lot of HP and it should be going 75 mph plus........

Now assuming it is a 1.5:1 and is turning 5000 rpm, sounds like something else may be wrong.

tachometer reading high (my old tach did that before it died)
waterlogged hull holding the speed down
slipping transmission
damaged prop

It is a SLOT w/ a 14 x 18. If your prop is dinged or beat up the speed is correct

Possible a 14 x 18 NEWER OJ 4 blade or even a 14 x 20 should get you there!!!

A good tuneup is always of help, NEWER upgraded intake would help also

yes 351 with 1:1 @5k. I like to step off at high speeds and then slow down to 40. I am not that good so faster the better even for 1 foots.Based on that,

The prop you have doesn't have a lot of cup to push it so the high R's are a result of that. Thus the speed is down.

A 1:1 is basically just that ==> MPH : RPM / 100.

I'd suggest an Acme 514 that has the CNC manufacturing process which gives you a nice smooth rotation (you'll notice a big difference) and the push that you need to get you 4400 - 4600 R's and about 44 - 45 MPH.

You just have a mismatched prop (as your thread topic).

My suggestion is the Acme 514 prop, done deal. I am running one on an 85 model with the 1:1.

http://www.acmemarine.com/

The 351 with the 1:1 puts out about + / - 240 HP. Five thousand R's is alot of strain on it.

I've seen a lot of these boats over the past bunch of years. They run comfortable at 4200 - 4400 for a footer. Much more comfortable at the 36 MPH. Just sayin'.

I am very pleased with the 514 on a 351, 1:1. The 4 blade prop is just too much mass (so to speak) to turn when the 3 blade will meet your needs. $0.02. It's like having one too many pieces of bubblegum to chew. Works OK but just too much there.

Either you don't have a 14 by 18 at the moment or you don't have a 1:1 transmission. You need to figure out what is what before you go ordering stuff or you will end up with a useless prop.

Seriously.. I agree.. A 3 Blade is the way to go... I have a 514 on my 90 with a 351 and am seeing about 44-45.. I weigh 245 so I need it all Long Line for sure...

I would guess the current propeller has seen a repair or two, the RPM is up a bit. A newer 14 X 18 should bring the RPM down and pick up the MPH. Adding some cup to the current prop may help as well.
