I have been reading about registering trailers in the state of Maine even if you don't live there.
Apparently it is quite inexpensive and as far as I can tell, totally legit. There are statutory agents that do all of the paperwork for you and the fee is $87 for a 5 year registration. 5 years is the minimum but you can do longer too (works out to ~$17/yr.).
I pay $102.50/year here in Maryland so it seems like a no brainer. My boat will stay registered in MD, but the trailer (which I use very sparingly) will get a nice new Maine license plate.
They say a lot of semi-trailers are registered in Maine because of the low costs for registering a trailer and the fact that no state inspection is required for trailers.
I don't see a down side. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this or looked in to it?

The folks at the second link sent me some info via email and they are a few dollars less than the 1st one.
