View Full Version : Fuel Pump
I have read at least 3 complete threads on the fuel pump issue.
I'm getting ready to pull the pump module out and change out the pump.
Two questions:
-How do I check for power to the pump? I just don't want to put a new pump in and find out later that the pump is just not getting electric.
-I read about people draining their fuel before starting this. Is that necessary? Can't I just pull that module out and work on it and put it back in. There's at least 20 gallons in there and I don't want to drain it.

I highly suggest that you let a dealer with proper tools and training do this for you

1-With a voltmeter.
2-No.
Easy job.Good luck!
Ok, did finally find a popped online fuse under dash and replaced it but still had issues getting fuel so I continued on with the process clearly illustrated by BOOFER (thanks so much) for disassembling the fuel pump module to replace the pump with a pump I got from advanced auto. ( it was e2065 airtex pump xref off ep365 that everyone in those other threads said to use)
Everything went smooth and now my 2000 xstar runs better than it has in a while.
Thanks everybody who has posted all their similar issues.
I'm a long way from the dealer and I only spent $90 to fix what would have cost $700+ there. Plus, they're so busy they wouldn't have gotten to it until after a week or so.
Now I can ride and surf on the holiday.

Did you drain the tank?
My pump just went out on me. Stranded me on the lake yesterday evening. Was kind of nerve wracking to be blowing across the lake towards the rocky cliffs. Luckily the shoreline must have flattened out because my anchor finally caught something about 30 feet from shore (note to self: get longer anchor line).
My 90 gallon fuel tank has at least 65 gallons left in it. I don't even have any idea where I would put that much gasoline. I guess I could call all the neighbors and fill up their cars.
I think it went out because 2 weeks ago at lake powell I ran it down to the point that I put in 75 gallons. Must have been the start of the end right there.
No.
Just kept a few towels around the opening where we pulled out the pump module and disassembled it to get to the fuel pump. (check out post "fuel pump 101")
It went well, after we did that, we ran it for a while and it was great. Then yesterday, we put it in and it started overheating immediately and it didn't look like it was cooling.
I don't think the two problems are related but the proximity makes me wonder. I checked the intake on the hull to see if it was clogged and it looked clear. Belt was spinning the pulley on the water pump so it must be the impeller??? I'm ordering one and I'm going to check that next.

I got mine done yesterday. Not a big project, but it was good to have some help from a guy who knows their engine stuff very well.
I did not drain the tank either. Just made sure to keep all sparks away. The only hiccup (which may have been mentioned elsewhere) is that the fuel hose clamps are very small and Neither my local Napa or Carquest had clamps that sized. So I replaced it with bona fide fuel hose that is much thicker than the original hose. The stores' smallest clamps fit over that nice and tight.
Ran her for several hours yesterday without a problem. Still runs up close to where the rev limiter must be about to kick in. (5400 RPM is what I got yesterday). So seems I am getting plenty of fuel.
