View Full Version : 454 vs 350/351 in a tourney boat

A frien of mine is seeking my advice on a Malibu Echelon, circa 1994, 19' closed bow with a 454 EFI (~400 hours). Sweet looking boat but I'm not sure about the 454. Since all of the tourney market seems to have landed on the 350/351 V8, it seems like the 454 would reduce the market size in the event of resale, would consume gas at an even higher rate, and is a slightly bigger engine box in the cockpit. The boat specs says it adds only 100 pounds.
Any opinions out there on the pros cons of the 454 in a tourney boat?

If the price is right and the boat is well maintained why not? Besides the larger engine box I don't think there is any downside.

I've heard that too much power isn't desirable in the course. For example that the LY6 has 'too much advantage over the skier'. Granted I'll never ski well enough for it to matter. For a 15 year old boat I wouldn't give it a second thought though.
I had an 89' prostar equipt from the factory with the 454 chevy. Awesome!!! the only fault was interior space. The engine box was bigger. But the pull and the acceleration spectacular.

If you barefoot, all the more reason to consider it.
