Has anyone got a system set up a way to lock the port side seat down? specifically on an X45, but I'm assuming the method should work most models. We would like to leave some gear on the boat as opposed to hauling it home each time we use it. Any help would be appreciated.

My wife and I were just talking about that this weekend. That a great feature for a boat would be locking storage sections. Wonder why nobody's done that yet.

Seems to me that a boat with the build quality and available features MC's are offering that a LOCKER on the boat should be a standard feature. That being said, a Macgyver set up on older boats would still be beneficial.

because it's typically cheaper to lose some gear than it is to have to replace the skins and pay the gel coat doctor.

I think it would work as a deterrent thought Bruce. They find it locked and move on to the next boat. Unless the person knew what was in the locker, chances are they'd be less inclined to break it open.

maybe we should ask the legal advice kid? "rim-shot"

just kidding.

maybe scott, but thieven' sorts typically have a strange sense of curiosity, one so strong that locks tend to look like dollar signs.

All depends on the strength and design. It wouldn't be too hard to design a locker that would be very difficult to get into, but it would probably add a bit of cost to the boat, as it would involve significant changes in construction beyond the obvious addition of a lock. Adding a crappy lock to the current storage components would be a total waste.

If done right I do think it would do it's job and be a feature people would pay for. Skilled thieves don't go around stealing life vests and ropes. The knuckle dragger that's gonna steal your board is an opportunity thief, not a pro, and if the set up was done right, it would keep them out. Same way it keeps people out of the trunk of your car.

As mentioned, locks only keep lazy thieves honest. I would be willing to be that if a theif sees it is locked they will attempt to get inside and could do more damage trying to break-in than the value of what is inside. Where do you draw the line on what to lock? Speakers, stereo, sub, battery, etc.? A friend with an offshore boat used to lock his reels and GPS in a locker on his boat but the thieves took a hammer to the fiberglass. He now removes his valuables.

Reminds me of my old college days (30 years ago) when I had a Jeep with a soft top and the cheap factory locks on the doors. My buddy had the same setup but had his locks and doors fortified because he had a booming stereo system. The theives wanted the speakers and a after a minute struggle, they decided to take a knife to his soft top. Even back then, the soft top was more expensive than the speakers.
