1999 x-star w/350 LT-1, bought new alt. and when we got it, the wiring set up is different? Old alt. had 3 bolt and nut, slip on & tighten up!!! simple enough. Black, orange, and purple. New alt. which I did call and check with company is the new equivalent to the old. has one bolt and nut, then coming from back of alt. has a purple wire and a red wire??? do I just match up and go or is there a trick. just want to make sure before I screw something up.

Sorry, mine was like that too. I traced mine back from the altenator. I went from the 50 amp to a 110 Amp Marine altenator and also added a battery and the borg relay from Diesels old post. Had to modify the mount accept the larger housing of the new alt.

This post is for moral support only......

tried to install yesterday and new alt casing is just simply too big to fit mounting brackets. lacks about an inch!!!! how do you modify mounting brackets for this

I had to grind to get clearance for the casing and I believe I had to weld an area to extend on of the mounting holes. I searched the old PC and could not find any of the pics when I modified the bracket. Current bracket looks factory. If I can get pics of it tonight or tomorrow I'll post so maybe you can see the differance now.

Last year I replaced my alternator to accommodate a substantial stereo upgrade. When the new one came the wires matched up fine and the bolt pattern as well. However, there was a ridge/nub on the housing of the alternator that prevented me from sliding the unit left/right to put the belt on and than tighten. I ended up taking an angle grinder to it and made it fit. The alternator has worked well.

Here are some photos of my OLD alternator.
