View Full Version : How long have/will you own your boat?

I've seen quite a few boats now that are 10 years old that are in GREAT shape and do not seem all that dated, except for things that I don't really consider must haves (computers in the dash).
It got me thinking, if I got the right boat... something newer and perhaps more expensive than I had origionaly planned, how long would I keep it. Seems to me like spending a little more for something you'll keep twice as long is a better financial decision than trying to upgrade slowly every 2-4 years.
So how long have you owned your current boat, or more importantly how long do you plan on owning your boat?

I have owned my boat for 2005. I have skied behind my boat since it was a few weeks old. LOL
I will be buried in my 91, my family knows they better have a big *** hole to put me in. LOL

My boat now is my 5th in about 10 years (not counting a salt water boat we keep on the coast, but it is not in the expense or performance class of our Mastercraft). I would imagine I'll have the X-14 another 3 or 4 years.
It's hard to say what is right for any one person. Families change, boat technology changes, new activities come to the fore -- etc. Hard to predict keeping "twice as long" regardless of how much you spend.

First Mastercraft was a 92 PS 205 bought new in 93. Kept it 6 years and sold it for more than I bought it for...(Yes lots of extra's added, look at my 95 Maristar and see )
Second Mastercraft was bought in May 2004. It's a 95 Maristar 225V. Yes lot's of extra's added again. No plans to sell anytime soon. Yes I would like a new boat with all the push button digital do everything option. But, My boat is paid for and so are all the options I have added. So the payment vs Fun factor is extremly favorable right now.

I now own my fourth Mastercraft , my first was a 77 SS , then an 85 SS , next came 92 Prostar 190 and now "and maybe my last" is a 94 Prostar 190 . This maybe my last one because at age 60 , this is all the boat I need . Now if I ever win the lottery , yes I would buy a new one !

We've owned 4 MCs so far.
89 TriStar - Purchased in 91 sold in 97. Bought this as my first real tow boat.
95 200VRS Maristar - Purchased in 97 sold in 2008. The TriStar didn't have enough room for the family and kid's friends. This was a great family/ski boat. Still one of my all time favorites.
03 X2 - Purchased in 08 sold in 09. Nice low hour boat (50 Hours when purchased). I know I'll get blasted for this but we just thought the 200 Maristar was a better boat. At least for us. Not enough room and you felt like you were sitting really high up in it compared to the Maristar. The 200 Maristar handled better too. Much lighter steering and better in deep water.
07 Maristar 200 with X2 package - Purchased in 09. This will probably be my last boat unless something happens that is compelling for me to change. Everyone in the family loves this boat. I've done and will continue to do upgrades. Surf tabs and Star Gazer come to the mind right off the bat. I actually bought this boat because of a "just couldn't pass up" deal that I was able to make due to the down turn in the economy. Traded my 03 X2 and and $8K for it.

That's awesome!! To date, I find myself getting bored way too easily to hold onto something that long (except for the wife but after 28 years I'll have to let you know) :D

I just hit the 25 year mark with the wife earlier this week.
I bought the boat 1 week after I met my wife. I think I realized she was the one and knew if I wanted a boat, I had to buy it quick.

3 Mastercrafts for me
1994 prostar that I only kept for 4 years (sometimes I still wish I had it) but at the time my buddy had a 1995 prostar so I got rid of mine planning to go out on his all the time. Well of course he sold his the next year. :(
2003 Maristar 230-great boat for our family, tons of room but I was never in love with the color (safari tan/white) so when a deal came along on my current ride I traded it in
2005 X-star- love it, love it, love it! Best boat to date but I know that some day I'll be searching for another MC (most likely an X-55) but that will have to wait until we get waterfront property in the future. I'd also like to find a sweet 1990 Limited to have as a 2nd boat, but again that would be in the future.
I've had 13 cars and 8 boats in less than 30 years, so I really don't hold on to things very long. (kinda $$$ stupid actually) Same wife for 24 years though! (not ready to trade her in) :D

I think owning a MC is great therapy for the mind, body and soul. Hopefully it will help prevent that from happening.

I have owned mine for 3 years. It's a 91 PS 190 I will probably sell it in a few years to get something geared more towards the family. If I had picked up a 95 or newer 205 I would probably never plan on selling. I will only sell it for for more space for the family.

This is my 2nd season with my 09 X14. But I had an 08 that I traded in because I was able to buy at fanfare for what I got in my trade. I planned to keep the '08 for 10 years. So if I have the 09 for 9 years I met my goal.
Then again things change.....I thought the cash rewards fairy was gonna drop me 40G to pay it off....I thought about selling a month ago but decided against.

I have had mine since 2000 and sorry NJSkier I will probably own it for another ten years. I'll still look you up when I plan on selling it. Besides it's a Texas boat and therefore probably conservative and might not feel comfortable in Jersey. :D

Bought mine new in 2006. If MC ever makes a hull that skis, wakeboards and surfs as well in a 23 footer I'll look. But it would have to be white

Probably never will find a boat that does all 3 at least as well. Keep up with your maintenance. :D Nice boat.

Bought mine September 1st, 2009 (last year), and I love it more and more each and every time I get a chance to get behind it:) Will have it until I'm able to upgrade to a newer X-series. Keepin' it in the MC family:)

Bought this 98 in 2006 with 66 hours and I have no plans of replacing her anytime soon.

Picked up my '00 230VRS back in May '08. I'd love to have a newer X-30 or X-45 but until the economy picks up the Maristar gives me very few complaints. I've already done some maintenance and upgrades to bring it up to snuff. I'm gonna add a tower to get the boards out of the V-drive area, add some ballast for surfing, and fix the damn gauge electrical gremlins so my gauges don't keep going haywire. Maybe add another battery and some big-power tunes on the tower once it's in. I think once I do that I'll have little cause for upgrading.

That's what is keeping me out of an X14, it would ski better, wakeboard well enough but I wouldn't want to put enough weight in it to surf. That's why I'm keeping what I have.

My family has owned a
- 1984 Stars & Stripes
- 1987 ProStar 190 (454)
- 1999 Sammy Duvall PS 205
- 2007 Master Craft X9
For me I picked up my 1983 Stars & Stripes in October of 2004 and never looked back. I have been restoring this boat to showroom condition and have love every minute of it. This boat has given our family many summers of memories. I dont think I will ever sell it.
Would not mind adding a second Master Craft someday to the family.....maybe a 98 PS 205 or a PS 190....but I think the S&S has found a permanent home with us.

1990 Maristar 24 SC project boat. I found this one in Illinois, 20 years old and still going strong. I've added a few things, upholstery redone new Starboard swim platform and a stainless tower from Barefoot International. Removed all the yellow from the boat and new graphics should be here this week.
Trailer was repainted and new hitch was intalled. All told I will have $15000.00 in it when I'm done, but with new X80's running $72,000.00 up here, still a great investment. Still have to rub out the gel-coat but it's coming along quite nice. Probably keep this boat for another ten years.

I bought my 1998 30th anniversary 190 new in 1999. I get to enjoy it 12 weekends a year, the other 40 weekends all I think about is being on that boat.
I've thought about getting a 197 and maybe after we get into our new house that will be in the cards. But if it isn't that is fine with me, I really like my boat, and I LOVE the payment! I guess I will have it until my kids want/need a v-drive for wakeboarding or my body won't let me slalom or go footin anymore. I still say that if the motor isn't in the middle, I don't want it!

This will be my 3rd season on my '92. It's only got 440 hours on it and she's my baby. I don't think I could have done better and I've never seen another black on black of this vintage.
I had my last little ski boat for 15 years, so unless I decide to give up skiing and buy an ocean boat I can sleep on, this will be it.

have an 08 X2, my plan was to keep for 2 years and then trade it in for new one. right now there appears to be at least a 20K-30K difference of trade and new one. I will keep for another summer, then see what is new out there. Dont keep things for a long time, like new stuff.

I've owned two MC's first one bought in 06 and second in 08 considering my track record for owning boats it seems to be about every 3 years I buy a new one but I really like this one and can't justify the expense of a new one just because it's newer.

1990 240sc, I bought it in Feb 0f 2001 off Lake Texoma, took it to Kansas City, and have since dragged it to AZ for the past 8 years. Love it and its uniqueness in the entirety of direct drive boats. It has always been a work in progress, but thats how it goes with a 20 year old boat.
Runs perfectly and has never left me on the water (knock on wood). I never just fix anything, I always upgrade.
This years big project is adding my new tower. See the second pic for the DW and myself holding it in place while my 10 year old takes a pic (hurry up this thing is getting heavy!).
Having the cuddy layout re-upholstered over the next 2-3 weeks with red Ultrasuede, $$$s but worth it. Super tough, waterproof, stainproof, smart money with 3 boys in the house...er....cuddy;)
