View Full Version : Body Slides - Pics
I think I'm going to try my first slide on a slalom ski today. Anyone have any pics of this? I want to see how people are puting their free hand down in front of them...

Good luck Ryan. I have a friend that does this move where he goes on to his back with his slalom ski on rides for a few seconds and then rolls to the other side and stands back up on the ski. People always find us on the lake after his little show with comments like that is the craziest thing they have ever seen. The first time he did it I was driving and paying more attention to what was in front of me when my spotter broke out in hysterics. Is that the slide?

Hehehe, thats called hot doggin, Steve. Daren Shapiro used to do that one on a wakeboard back in the early 90s. Tried it a few times myself & it only works if your not wearing a vest.
What I am thinking of is just going down on your hip/side (usually in a turn to keep you out of the wake) with the inside hand on the rope and the free outside hand coming down in front of your chest for stability - then get back up and go.
Steveo - I'm sure there's a name for what you're talking about - I've always heard it called back-slide spin... Does your buddy get his ski back under him again? That would be impressive.
Y see, we were out skiing wednesday and this guy on shore held up a bill and asked us for a pull - did four body slides, skied better than anyone else behind my boat, and even road backwards twice (the ticktock I believe). Very good and very inspiring. I think I found my new driver.
I just tried the body slide this afternoon. Um... I need some work. It turned into more of a catch the hip and burry the head routine. It threw a lot of water in the air and in my ear. Maybe next time. My buddy just about has it down after today. And since I'm a sucker for peer pressure I've got to do it too.

In the old days (I am "goofy" foot) I would cut to my strong side (my left) and hold the rope to my left hip in my left hand and SLOWLY drop to the water on my right side with my right arm extended flat to the water. You can even lift the ski out of the water and bend your knees forward to drop the ski back in. It is really not a cut but a a smooth calculated lay down at the full extention of the rope. 15'-22' off. A little or no vest is better for the slide. Shorty only is recommended. I have returned to skiing recently but am close to form. If I can I will get some pics. Smooth water is hard to come by here no matter what hour! Good luck, it was fun but kind of a waste of perfect water.

Alright dipthong! I cut to my strong side (my left) and lay over to the water while still going fairly straight. I have the rope in my left hand and my left arm is extended down my side. My right arm is extended and flat against the water. I am basically way out on the left (my left goofy) side of the boat with the rope extended and to my left hip while my body slides on top of the water with my inside right arm extended toward the wake. Do I need to draw a freakin picture! Just drinkin! I am not a coach nor a teacher, this is how I will do it and very much how I remember it. Of course it always makes sense to the drunk who writes it!

Similar position (sort of) but no ski edge is in the water. your ski is parallel to the boat not perpendicular. Both a ton of fun though! It is much easier than it sounds.like a power slide on a ski... sorta... right....haha

No pictures. But here's a description from Water Ski Mag.
The Body Slide
By Dave Reinhart (more by this author)
Within the sport of hotdog slalom, the body slide is one of the more impressive maneuvers. And, with the new wide-body skis, I've found the trick just as easy to perform - if not easier - because of the slower boat speed needed. Here's how.
First, the body slide isn't a body slide at all, but rather a slide on your hip and butt. To do it well requires a wetsuit, preferably a barefoot suit. For right-foot-forward skiers, the body slide is easiest on the right side of the wake; lefties, just the opposite. However, there is no right or wrong side - find whatever feels comfortable for you. This is important, because the setup is nearly as critical as the body slide itself. I'm right-foot-forward, so my instructions reflect this setup.
With the boat traveling in a straight line at a comfortable ski speed (22 to 32 mph), ski wide outside the left wake. When the rope comes tight, turn with a strong pull across the wakes to the right, generating plenty of speed (Photo 1); the more speed you create, the more time you'll have to slide. After you cross the wakes and are about 20 feet outside of them, let off your cutting edge to lessen the tension on the rope. But don't turn the ski. Practice this speed-generating and edge-changing technique until it becomes natural.
Once you're coasting and have changed edge, bend your knees and gently sit down on your left hip or butt (Photos 2-5). This position, combined with the speed you've generated, creates the body slide. While in the slide, hold the handle in your right hand, close to your waist. Use your left hand for support and balance on the water (Photo 6). You will only be able to hold the slide for a few seconds, especially in the beginning. After you feel comfortable with your slides, try to straighten your legs more and hold up your head to make the trick cleaner. Once the tension returns to the rope, simply right the ski underneath you and stand up. The boat will pull you out of the trick.

Ryan, He did get back on the ski. He used a rear to plate not a high wrap. It truely is impressive or completely nuts depending on your view. :eek3:

That looks great....I do that all the time after I loose the grip on my ski. I wish I could do it on purpose :)

Ryan,
Great drawings and yes that is what it looks like. You lay into the water not cutting. Let your ski lose it's edge and when you're ready bend the knees and place the ski in front of you. That is it. Now I will read what the pro's say.
See yah
PS after reading I disagree! You can slide body flat with arm out! Try it like your pics not on your butt. You may hit hard at first but that will get your ski around. Once again great pics. I reviewed old videos and could not locate but maybe this weekend!
Oh yeah, second pic definately not the first pic. I never tried it on a fat board but I suppose like the picture shows it would work. Mine were all on an old Connelly HP. No butt first, that is "Goofy!" Get up early smooth is better.
PSSSS Send Pics!!!!!!!!!!!
Stevo-Your friend is doing what some call a worm turn and others just a tumble turn. I skied with a guy that could do body slide anywhere. We would do 2 man atb's and I would be the long line guy. We would do them the opposite way and he would do a body slide under my rope as we crossed. it was hot!

This was posted by John B on the wipeout forum but I thought this is similar to what it should look like. Am I right?

Pretty close Parks. Although I think if he was doing a body slide intentionally he'd have the handle in his other hand so he can push himself back up with the hand closest to the water.
