I have a 1977 Mastercraft Stars and Stripes and the starter hangs up when I start the boat. The starter spins for about 4-5 seconds after the engine starts. I just replaced the ring gear because it was all chewed up. I also had the starter reworked and it still hangs up. Any ideas.

Could be a number of things. Likely your solenoid is bad and not disconnecting when you release the key from the crank position. How sure are you of the work on the starter? Could also be a dirty shaft the starter drive rides on or a bad starter drive (bendix). Could also be from low cranking system voltage due to bad connections.

By the way, Welcome to Team Talk. Would love to see some pictures of your '77.

Mr MasterCraft is probably right, either the solenoid or the bendix.
