View Full Version : Trailer lights grounding

Hi all, this might seem like a dumb question but does the trailer have to be on the truck hitch or and/or the safety chains connected to the truck for the lights to work? I replaced the ground on my trailer today and coonected the plug to the truck but they would not work. Once I connected the chains they worked.

Your ground plug wiring is not properly connected........

I agree with Maristar210.

50 years ago people tried to get away with grounding the trailer lights through the hitch ball or chains, but gave it up. These days, there should be a seperate wire in the connector for ground. It's probably been broken, could be either the truck side or the trailer side, or the plug could be miswired.
