Heading down south next weekend and want to help install a new radio on my uncles boat. I have two 6x9 marine JBL's sitting around un-used, I have a feeling he has round 6's maybe in there currently. How hard would it be to throw these things in there if they are round 6' or 5.5's not sure what they are

There was NO STANDARD in 89...It was whatever you made it. As I recall there are ROUND
CUTOUTS on the combing pads. Both FOWARD and AFT. Back then dealers did stereo installs not the factory

ahhhh, so 6.5' speakers then is my guess. How hard would it be to throw a set of 6x9's in it? Is there room for them front or back? How bad is it to cut the vinyl back?

You need to remove the combing pad. The vinyl gets an X cut through it then the speaker gets installed

The easiest way is to remove the combing pad.

6x9's would have to go verticle from the looks of it.

Verticle would be the only way. I just added 6's to mine last summer. There is not but an inch or maybe two between the edge of the speaker holes and the edges of pads. Good luck.

I hate to be nitpicking, but shouldn't it be coaming pad?

The original owner of mine put 6X9's in the stern, I replaced them awhile ago. They were 6" across and 9" up & down. Looks like they just elongated the cut with a jigsaw for the backing & utility knife for the vinyl. Didn't look pretty, but looks great with the speakers installed.

technically, i don't think it should be combing or coaming, and a coaming is a panel installed to prevent water entry into a vessel. this is really just an interior trim panel.
