View Full Version : Can't Drive 55!
At the beginning of my trip to Montana, I got pulled over.
1) $157 for being in the wrong lane-#2 out of four; I understood the DMV site to imply stay out of #1 except to pass and that all others are fair game. It's way more complicated. Traffic school is an additional $30 option + cost of class.
2) Driving 69mph when trailered vehicles are only to be towed 55. He let me go on that one.
If in CA I recomend staying to the right lane to keep it simple.

None yet, knock on wood. I tend to move a little more slowly with my baby hooked up to the truck.

Been lucky so far. Tend to be a little more careful with the boat in tow. But then again I don't have to tow far.

Back when we had to tow the boat, I used to drive anywhere from 65 to 75. I know where most of the "traps" are on the way to the lakes around here so I just keep my cool in those areas. US 101 speed traps on the way to Naci haven't changed in years. Too predictable. :D B

Wow! You guys are really lucky/law abiding. Maybe I shouldn't have voted for the 4 or more column.
Had a couple tickets in Co. trucks pulling trailers. Rest of them seem to have happened late at night, getting to the destination, blow thru a little podunk town and there's a barney fife sitting at the edge of town w/ a radar gun.
Speaking of trucks... the cop said "I know it's complicated. Just stick with the semi's, they radio around, you'll know where we are if they slow down all of the sudden."

I haven't been pulled over while towing, but the last ticket I got was for going 75 in a 70MPH zone in North Dakota - probably would have gotten off if I had noticed the red lights behind me sooner. Ticket was all of $25.00 - you can't afford not to speed. :steering:

I usually set the cruise between 72 and 75 on my trip North to WI and am fine. (Knock on wood!)
A couple times during the trip, I will hit 80 when I am passing people.

Coming home from Havasu in the middle of the night, we hit 105 mph in a custom Chevy van pulling an '88 Prostar across the Utah desert........ wasn't me driving.

105 is pretty quick w/ a boat! I may be guilty of hitting 90 at one point, but not triple digits....

Around here speed limit is 70mph with or without a trailer. I keep it around 74mph most of the time unless I am passing. Haven't been towing much this year as I finally got a garage at my lake to keep the boat in.

Was me wakin up though! Actually I was surprised that we were rollin as fast as we were..... it didn't feel like 105 at all.
I like driving between 70-75 with a trailer. Unless I get some Z rated tires on the trailer I'm not comfortable going anything over 80 not with my wife and kids on board.
Peason, that's cheap. I'd speed more often it CA charged like that. I think the last ticket I got was about $12/mph over + a surcharge.
Montana used to have a thing if you got a ticket you could pay the cop directly and if you got pulled over again, you could show the next cop the first ticket and not receive a second. It was like buying a speeding pass for the day. In '95 they had no day time speed limit (~within reason~). Unfortunately that ended May of '99 with a cap of 75.

I'd have to agree with that one. Although I'm pretty sure of a couple things...... that the van didn't have Z rated tires, much less the trailer....... and that a roll over at 80 mph isn't much worse than a rollover at 105. :steering:

Never a ticket in the Vette.........triple digits almost every time I took it out...........176 MPH once in Ga. :D As far as towing, usually 75-80 all the way from Cincy to Cumberland every week-end. No tickets with either vehicle :steering:

I got a ticket the first day I ever owned a boat (april of this year). I made it all the way from Salt Lake City to the panhandle of Ok, and got stopped (35 in an unmarked 25) in a town of about 300 people, no gas station or store of any kind, but a brand new police cruiser. It said right on the ticket that I could pay $50 over the ticket cost and they would not put it on my record. I love it. Robbery and extortion.

Two weeks ago we were coming home (sober) from relatives about 50 miles east of us in Lansing, Mi. My son was wiped out and the wife had a couple of glasses of wine. It was about 7:30 and their was no one on I-96. My spoiled wife has a Mercedes 300e 4 matic. So I thought....hmmm no speeding tickets lately.... let spool this beeeoch up.
at 115 she woke up and said "how fast are you going?". Lots of pedal left but as fast as I wanted to go with the "family" in the vehicle.

I've used the Hypertech OBDII programmer to get the top end set to 118... I've had it to 110, but chickened out when I started thinking about the tire's speed ratings.:o

Snagged an 86 in a 55 in Downtown Atl (w/o Boat). That one stung. Run around 80 - 85 everywhere I go on the interstate, slow it down to 80 with the trailer, unless I am running down hill. Had the Avalanche kick out at 100 several times.
Mag - Where in GA did you crank it up to 176? (Ask Ben Affleck about running that fast in GA)
Erkle - I hope you weren't towing with cruise engaged. (Not good for our friend the transmission. See new transmission for 97 Tahoe for doing that)
Siz and Jeremy - You cats on the crotch rockets ain't right.

I have a buddy that used to race them. He stopped after he hit turn 4 at Daytona International Raceway and woke up at Halifax Medical Center the next day.
I came so close to getting a bike! I went with cash in pocket to buy a nice Kawasaki one day. But, when I got up to the door there was a notice saying the house had been busted for beeing a meth lab. I figured it wasn't meant to be.
That, and get away quick before this could happen:

I grew up in North Dakota. Once had a stretch where I got 9 tickets in a 6 month period. All very inexpensive; a dollar or two for each MPH over the limit at that time until you got close or into the triple digits. After the first half dozen tickets, I decided to get the speedometer fixed. Unfortunately, when you get a decent sized ticket - the rest start to accumulate points and I ended up loosing my driving priviledge for a few weeks.
I haven't had any tickets with a trailer in tow. I generally rachet back my speed due to control and safety concerns. Don't trailer much anymore, either.

I drive with Murphy in the passenger seat.
About every time I really start to hammer it, there is one of Ohio's finest state troopers sitting at the side of the road shooting everyone with their laser. This has happened to me way too many times, so I know that Murphy is with me.

That would be I-16 Notorious for the speed traps. If you know where they are you can rock the rest of the way. It is long straight and flat, a great place to drop the hammer.

Usually keep it to a tame 70 with the trusty ol' Citizen's Band on and comm. with the truckers. Helps more than a R.D. 99% of the time.
