View Full Version : Gasoline storage safety?

Does anyone have any comments on gasoline storage safety? I have six five gallon cans that I always keep out at the lake. I wondered if there are any issues with keeping full gas cans at the house.
What do you folks do?

I have a small shed I keep the mower, etc in along with room for six 6 gallon cans. I keep it far enough away from everything else, just in case.
I carry 90% of my gas in 6 gallon cans.

Just suck it in to your Fat Sacks! Works great, gives you that perfect wake and its always available. I figure an X-9 should be able to hold around 500 gallons of gas. You could wakeboard from Louisville to New Orleans.

What do you folks do?Make sure the cans are vented as heat builds during the day. Gas expands significantly. On my gargage I keep posted the main chemical content (within the garage) including the amount of chemical and fuel (diesel in the truck, kerosene for the heater, and gasoline) on any given day, and the location in case of a fire. Our fire dept. provides home placards for everyone's safety.
Avoid static electric situations for storage of gas containers.

Ok - that's too much for me. Good - and I'm jealous, but no way I could ever keep track of all that stuff.
I keep as much flamable liquids (gas, cutting torches, etc) in a detached shed, etc.

I only keep gas in the cans long enough to get it into the boat or out to the lake, where they are kept in a plastic storage container. They are the new, vented variety.

Speaking of gas, last month there was an invention in Waterski Mag that was a large piece of PVC pipe and some fuel line mounted to a post on the dock. You could pour the gas into the large pvc pipe and then place the fuel line into the gas tank. Waterski stated the the instructions were online at www.wateskimag.com/(this is the part that I can't find). Anybody see this? Or find the instructions?

Looks like a good idea, but I think it should have a valve added also.

Last week, I went to lowes, spent 30 bucks, forgot two parts, and planned to spend some time fashioning the WSM funnel.
After I left Lowe's, I went to Walmart to pick up some beer and saw the Flow & Go, which is a little gas pump-lookin siphon that you hook up to your red cans to pump gas into your boat. It was $19. I bought it, and returned all the PVC, etc. to Lowe's. The Flow & Go works like a champ. It does leave maybe 1/2 gallon in the tank, but that can be poured in in seconds with no mess at all. Pretty cool little device.

I need one of those. I am tired of free pouring full 5 gallon cans into a funnel only to have it splash all over me and the boat. How quickly does it unload the fuel?

I just replaced all my misc. cans with 6 of the $15.00 a can style that have 2' of 1" hose attached to them. Empties 5 gallons in 45 seconds and I'm standing upright opposed to hunching over. The long hose allows for no splashing and really kicks bu++.

I have that article printed at the house with intent to build. It is a real bear to try fuel up my boat without assistance. This is a good solution for me.
And in keeping on point, I keep the 6 six gallon cans in the shed of the boathouse. It stays cool in there and is well vented, as are the cans.
And now that I have read page 2, I will be headed to Wal-Mart for the pump Doug mentioned above.

You give the pump about 5 squeezes to prime it and it comes out at a pretty good pace. Probably not as quickly as just pouring it in, but fast enough. I tend to fuel up slowly anyway as if I do it too fast, it will end up all over the transom.

Where can you get these?
I got mine from summit racing www.summitracing.com (http://www.summitracing.com)
Got the square style with 2 handles (one up top for carrying & 1 for pooring). Absolutely love the design, but currently have a problem as they'll seep gas out while you're hauling them full in your car. They really stand behind their stuff though. I expect to hear from them today or tomorrow for a fix.
If you get them, you'll want to order 2 caps to add the hoses. They're threaded. Don't get the kit that includes the hose, just the cap (you can build a much better hose from depot). Then go to home depot, get a 3/4" male pipe thread into 3/4" barb adapter. Buy 2' of 1" OD, 3/4" ID clear plastic hose & 1 pipe clamp. Also, I bought a 3/4" plug for the end that I only put partially in.
You may also want to check out Jegs (jegs.com). If you order in groups of 4, call & they'll give you a discount.

Nothing like filling it up in 35-45 seconds per 5 gallons.

Same here. and in my case with the fuel filler on the side of the boat I usually need someone else to hold the funnel. Lunch is at Wal Mart today.

I didn see in Summit, but may order one from Jegs to try out.

You should be ok as long as you take the cap with the hose off for transportation (put a non-hose cap in it's place).
I love the speed of the poor. You'll get notic'ably faster poor times if you're completely vertical with the jug/hose. At approx a 45 deg angle, I timed mine at 45 seconds. Not bad.
1 more tip. Turn the jug completely up-side down before opening the vent cap. Otherwise, you'll get a small splash out of the cap before it starts sucking air. Once it's sucking air, it'll never drip any gass out of the vent.

But - they don't have pic's anymore (wonder what happened?) Maybe they pulled the line until they figure out what to do with the problem I found?

I figured as much, the Wally here in Tucker, GA is a junior. We have a Super where I live. The did have a siphon for 3 bucks but I decided to hold out 'til tonight.

I just did a search for Flo N Go. The ones at the boat specific sites were more expensive.
Success with locating the Flo'nGo at the Super Wally. AND, I paid only $15 for it as opposed to the shelf price of $19.94. My funnel holders are rejoicing. ;)

I also have the VP racing fuel ones similar to the JEGS ones and those things pi$$ out the vent hole. I now use that one to store old gas and oil for recycling. The PITCAN looks kind of hokey but it is the one I use to fill all of the bikes and top off the boat. Worth the money IMO.

is this tank really that easy and won't cause DRIPS or spills or splashes???quite pricey at $29.95 + $10.95 shipping & handling, ouch that's like 10+ gallons of fuel for just one...

I've taken the regular 5-6 gallon cans and modified them. I cut most of the flexy yellow spout off slide in a small piece of 3/4" coduit and clamp on about 12-18" of 1" rubber hose. can drain a can very speedy. The conduit gives you something to clamp too. the "real" race jugs were too pricey for me. TB

I wish, and I do mean wish, that somebody would come up with a replacement cap/hose assembly for all of those crappy vented cans that everyone has now.
You would think that somebody would have came up with something by now.
The cans themselves I have no problem with....its the worthless nozzle that kills me.

the nozzles are total crap, they crack over time and often "flip-out" spewing gas everywhere!!!and of course you have to use the spout, otherwise to pour straight from the jug means you get the can dribble running down the edge...
come up with a design and my company can make it out of plastic!!!

A design would be easy, making it work without a second vent would be difficult at best. On the old cans, we had the small vent with a cap on the back that would allow air in as you poured. No second hole on the new ones means that even if you could put a 1" hose on in lieu of the nozzle it would still glug a little when a vacuum formed inside the can.
The easier thing to do would be to make a huge funnel that actually worked.
I will try the walmart pump thingy too.

problem with using a funnel is they carry dirt and never sit down on your dock, want to roll off into the water...drip gas on the dock when you remove them...
thinking the pump mechanism is going to do the same darn thing...

Make sure you don't store them in garage with gas water heater.
Fumes are heavier than air and stay near the floor. Which is where the flame is on the water heater
