Hello All - This Winter, Ive finally achieved my dream of buying my own Mastercraft. Its a 1990 Prostar 190 with the 1.5 velvet drive trans. So, Ive never changed the oil and would like to before the season starts. How do I tell what engine I have, or what oil and filter to use? I know it's the indmar, but there is another forum on this subject that says there are Ford and Chevy versions that take different filters and have different specifications. Which do I have? The owners manual that can be downloaded doesn't seem to narrow it down. Any advice would be great. Thanks - Scott

Congratualtions! ANd you got a powerslot too! (1.5:1 trans)
Don't know the Filter #'s, but someone here does, or look at what's on there.
Takes 5qts +/- depending how much oil you get out. 15W-40 reccomended, but any decent multi weight will work, 10-40, 20-50.
Should have a hose comeing fromt eh drain plug with a cap on it to drain the oil. I use a drill operated pump ($10 at Napa), rigged up some hoses and fittings to screw to the drain hose. This will suck the oil out quickly and cleanly (and the pumps handy for sucking out the trans oil, just stick the hose down intot he trans and suck out as much as you can and refill).

If you look at your exhaust manifoild from the side, the ford 351 has the outlets from the engine in a equal distance from eachother, the GM 350 has the 2 outlets in the middle closer to eachother, probably better ways to tell the difference tho;-)

Skidim has oil filters from PCM, they also list up other filters that fit, for example the fram PH8A for 351 ford. If you have a 351 you should use oil with sufficient levels of ZDDP (Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) to prevent wear on the flat tapped cam in that engine. I use the 20W-50 supreme classic GTR mineral oil from Dynocat , other oils that have enough zink is valvoline VR1 and some others, don't know what you'll find in the us, but you probably have more oils with enough zddp over there than in Norway.

Any Valvoline Quick Lube or anyone who sells Valvoline can order the VR-1 Racing oil from their Valvoline distributor. I use 50 wt Part # 229 @ about $29 a 12 qt case plus tax in the US.

Motorcraft FL-1A for the filter if you can get it.

Second or third the oil with adequate ZDDP for your flat tappet cam. I use VR-1 20W50.
