Palmer teak method

Snappy Teak-Nu this takes about 45 min to a hour total. following instructions on back of the bottle wet teak with water then apply solution number one (wearing rubber gloves trust me i didnt yesterday and my hands are still all messed up) scrub and ensure an even coat pushing with medium pressure with included fingernail brush. make sure to get in between all the crack and crannies. do the entire teak. dont try and do half and half.

the teak will turn dark dark brown almost black. all of this gummy sludge will come out of the wood.

then apply solution number two and spread evenly with a small amount of pressure with second included fingernail brush. you will see the teak turn back to a bright tan color. when it is applied over the entire surface there should be not be any more extremely dark colored wood. of corse there will be the grain of the wood having different colors but no major dark spots. when preforming cleaning you will see what i am talking about. then rinse with fresh water. if you see any remaining dark spots then spot clean with solution number 2.

allow teak to dry COMPLETELY!!! then apply star bright teak oil...i recommend at least three or four coats.

you are done. there is no sanding or scraping. the teak will retain its texture and will not be slick.

i think next time i am going to put the cleaning solutions in a spray bottle and label them well. this should make it is easier to apply...

I've been using that stuff for 10 years. Works great.

The spray bottle is the key to getting more than two applications out of it. You waste a ton poring it on like they seem to want you to. I where safety glasses when doing this as I can just imagine what it could do t your eyes if it somehow blew back in your face.

Nice work. The sanding has never worked for me because I give up before I get all the dirt and mildew removed. This looks like a nice alternative.

That stuff seems to work really good. Kingsley, or anyone know where I can find it?(I know he name the marina he bought it from, I doubt they ship) I looked online for a retailer, but some of the sites seemed shady.

Thanks

More coats. Have the same boat and same platform. Seems like the 6th coat finally took after I sanded it intially. Four coats a year since.

Julio, picked up some great stuff locally... did require some sanding though. If you don't want to sand, this isn't your stuff, but I thought it turned out well.

scott how slick is your platform now? that is the biggest problem that i have noticed with the guys that sand their teak. if it is wet and you try to stand up you almost have to hold onto the boat so you dont slide off.

I haven't had it in the water, so it's a little tough to tell. I didn't sand the snot out of it though, so it still feels like it has some texture left on it for traction. I guess we'll see. :D

I just got done usig the Snappy Teak-Nu 2 part system. Not impressed. I followed the instructions, but found that it left a lot of dark streaks on the teak. I'll let it dry nd then try to spot clean with #2, hope it looks better than it does now. If not, I guess it could always be sanded.

This is by far and away the easiest way to restore an old teak platform. 45 minutes is not an exaggeration of the amount of time it takes. I just finished cleaning mine and it took about an hour from start to finish, but it took me awhile to get started at first. Some thing I would add to the process are:

1. Pour out the solutions into small plastic containers (I used 2 small, plastic fruit containers from the grocery store). Pouring it on to the teak makes a mess. I used the containers with about 4 oz of solution and just dipped the respective brushes in and then applied.

2. The brushes they provide do not work well on the older platforms with gaps. 2 stiff tooth brushes are much more effective than trying to wedge the larger brushes in the gaps. Scotch Brite pads might work too.

I have spent the last 2 years trying to go through the whole sanding process but always gave up because it was time-consuming. No doubt the sanding process works when actually done correctly, but I could never get all the old oil and mildew off the platform. With Teak-Nu you just wet the platform, scrub in 2 solutions, and then rinse off. That's it. The only complaint I have about the product is that I didn't know about it 2 years ago and could have saved myself the 10 wasted hours, sore arms from sanding, and ugly teak. I ordered the "Complete 2 part kit" from: http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=4004 and it arrived in 4 business days.
