View Full Version : Hard Steering problem

2003 PS-197 with 105 hours.
One day I have 2 finger steering and the very next dat I have to use both hands. I disconnected the rudder and it turns freely. I lubed the cable tube where it extends fron the cable and reconnected the rudder. No improvement. Anyone had to replace a steering cable that's only 2 year old ?

Can you turn the rudder freely? When connected and when disconnected?
When you had the cable disconnected and the wheel turned easily, this suggests the cable is fine. Of course, still a reminder to grease it.
So I'd think either the rudder or the pivot. Unless, it also moved freely. In which case, I'm confused.

When I disconnected the rudder, the rudder turned freely not the wheel, so I have narrowed it down to the cable. I am just curious if anyone else has had to replace a cable that's so new. I saw a recal notice MC put out for steering cables on 2004's but my hull number was not on the list.

I am having the same problem on my '02 210. I'm not much of a mechanic, but have been told that it's probably my cable.

I had to replace the steering cable on my '01 x-star. My local dealer told me that they have seen a lot of cables go bad recently.

Use the new contacts section of the forum. Check with MC. Recently there were some bad cales out being changed out under warranty.

Having to replace my cable on my 02 ps190 also. Hard steering under turns at the end of the course. Dealer says thats its started to go. My brothers 01 also had the cable replaced last year. Hope they have improved the replacement cables.

yep. They go bad if they get moisture inside. Gotta keep the end lightly greased.

I left my boat out in the storm 4th july, then put in garage, next day put in lake, steering super stiff, did all the things you did, but I also disconnected cable from steering colume/tilt mechanisn, and was still stiff, so I took the tilt mechanism apart and wa-la, black graphite gook in the teflon/nylon bushings, took apart and cleaned shaft, rod and bushings(same bushing used on some disc brake systems) and wa-la fingertip steering again(do-not lube bushings with grease, makes matters worse, use graphite powder)

I had to replace the cable on my 2002 X-30 after 80 hours.

By the looks of it, I'm darned lucky for mine to have lasted 900+ hours. :D
