A neighbor is looking to delve into the world of ski boat ownership. His current ride is a toon so pretty much any ski boat is going to thrill him but he is looking at a sport star and I just have reservations about it. Here is the link http://www.boattrader.com/find/listing/2000-MASTERCRAFT-Sport+Star-95452325. Any advice would be appreciated. Just seems too high for a boat that is supposed to be a stripped out PS190. I could be totally wrong, if I am, please let me know and no offense to anyone out there that owns one because it's a lot newer than my boat. Thanks

I understand that it is a sportstar, although I am not totally aware of all the differences between a prostar, but it seems like a good deal to me. Looks clean and low hours. He can always make an offer on the boat and see what the owner will let it go for. People say its a buyer's market right now, so can't hurt.

well the benifits to that boat is it is not the evo hull...Any boat will be better then a toon is true for water sports. The buyers market will be gone soon with what manufactuers are doing.....you wont see the huge inventories or open slots to build boats that you have in the past, this will drive both new and used prices...

Looks to be in good shape, and less than 200 hours on a 10 year old boat too.

Coming from a 'toon he might want to keep looking for a 205 for the extra space.

Just don't sell him your boat, because you're saving it for me right? :D

I have a friend that actually owns one. I think that if your friend doesnt want a stripped down boat either a 190 or 205 will be better. If he is just looking for a good tractor this is not a bad deal.

I have seen this same boat pull 8 skiers off of the dock. 4 guys on bottom and every guy has a chick on his shoulders. I have footed behind it with 4 other guys so 5 total and it was a step off not deep up, but the boat did not bog down.

I personally would spend the same money and get an older boat with a nicer interior. The SportStar interior is just not as nice as a Prostar interior. A matter of fact Prostar is a lot Nicer.

Ski ability is going to be night and day different than that toon.

Looks like a fair price on a low hour boat. I personally would consider this a long term investment and look for a 205V even if I had to pay a bit more. Nothing worse than pulling the trigger on a purchase like this only to realize that you would have rather had something else after a month or two later. This is also a closed bow model (not that there's anything wrong with a closed bow boat. I know the slalom boys will tear me up for that statement) that will have a much smaller resale market should he decide that this is not the boat for him.

Spring is just a month away and if he has cash ready there will be deals out there. People will be looking to move their boats to either make room for a new one or to get out of boating altogether. You just need to be ready to pull the trigger when you see the right deal. Like my daddy used to say "there's always a better deal just around the corner if you're willing to wait for it".

Thanks for all of the advice... I have since found out that the boat does not come with a trailer so I have advised my client err.... friend to walk/run away. I am now charged with finding a ski boat for him before summer. He is not a bouy chaser and he is also not looking for a lot of space seeing the toon is not going anywhere... He has cash in hand and is thinking about spending 10 to 15k but would not rule out up to 20 if it was an excellant boat at a great price. any suggestions would be appreciated and I will be looking on the classified section of this site. Thanks again.

I know of a 93 205 for 10k. I don't have pictures but it is local. It needs some work but would make for a nice boat. Needs interior help, slight bend in the drive shaft but new prop, normal wear and tear. It does have a tower, sound system, and full of options. I think it even has PP. I wouldn't put my name behind the sale of the boat since I don't know to much about it besides seing it in person. He was wanting 15k till I told him he was an idiot. So he will take 10 now.

He bought a Bu. Oh well, I'll still tear up some water behind it if given the opportunity. I'm not that picky.
