Probably happens more than we care to realize, but how can anyone think this is a good idea?

Are the people of Michigan going to wise-up and vote the yahoos out of office any time soon? You guys need some relief, and I mean NOW!

Along these same lines, I was listening to a radio talk show (Dave Ramsey) yesterday on the way home from work. May have been a re-run, but a caller had just lost his job and was not able to make his mortgage payment among other bills. One of Dave's suggestions was for him to find a part-time job. Anything to get some money coming in. Dave asked the caller if he had a certain skill, etc. Turns out he was a union sheet metal worker. According to his union rules, he is not allowed to work as a sheet metal worker in a competing fashion. The guy lost his job and is NOT allowed to work as a shet metal worker! He could work as an electrician, plumber, etc but not in sheet metal. What kind of crap is that?

Serious questions - What good do unions serve in this day and age? Are they really for helping their people or lining their pockets at the expense of hard working individuals? Just asking...

I'm not sure, but I bet the union would have a hard time enforcing that restriction in court. IIRC, courts won't enforce unreasonable non-compete clauses that would prevent a guy from earning a living. But, they may be able to keep him out of other union shops.
