Guys,

I need to replace the gaskets on my exhaust manifolds and the risers. They're both leaking and the previous owner didnt change which has resulted in some surface rust around the riser gasket and where water has dripped down on the exhaust manifold.

Whilst i have the manifolds off i want to get them rubbed back and repainted. Whats the best way to do this? Can i do it all myself or do they need to be sandblasted or something?

Also, what gaskets and gasket glue do i need and where do i get it from.

Photo attached so you get an idea of the type of manifold. They're the older style mcx manifold (2004)

Thanks,

Skipper

You should be able to use wire wheels and wire brushes to remove most of the rust. Then chemicals llike naval jelly to get it down to the good metal. Just use a good high heat engine paint on the manifolds.

Are you running in salt or brackish water? Your motor mounts look pretty clean...

Maybe time to upgrade to the NEW exhaust manifolds of you are running in fresh.

If not DO NOT UPGRADE

There is no actual gasket between the exhaust manifold and the heads on the MCX. Indmar uses Silicone to seal this joint. When I replaced my MCX manifolds on my 2003 with the new aluminum one piece units I went to Home Depot and picked up a tube of 100% silicone and used that to seal the manifolds to the heads. By the way that wasn't my idea, MYMC gave me that pointer. Never had a problem with leaks after that install.

Thanks for all the tips.

Boat runs in both salt and fresh water. I plan to upgrade the manifolds in a year or so but for now i'd like to just clean the current ones up, make them look a little more "pretty" and stop any further rust developing.

Good to know there isnt any gaskets. Getting some good quality silicon is easy. What about between the exhaust manifold and the riser? Is there a gasket there or just silicon again?

So it sounds like i just need some good quality silicon and heat resistent paint. I have some tools to take off the surface rust and i'll paint on some rust convertor before applying the new paint.

I'll post some more pics once done.

BTW is there a big power difference between my manifolds and the ones on the later model MCX?

Thanks,

Mike

I think there is a paper gasket between the manifold and the riser. You should be able to pick them up from you local MC dealer or get them from Skidim.
