Yet another prop thread!! I have read pretty much every post on this site regarding prop selection and here is my quandary.

I have a 2001 230 with the TBI and the stock 14 X 20.
Itís a good all round prop but the hole shot could be improved for slalom and when we load the boat with 12 people and gear itís a little sluggish. Last year I bought 1,800 lbs of ballast sacks, which I have not yet used. I Ďm quite sure the problem is only going to get a lot worse when I start using ballast with a boatload of people.

I was considering picking up a used the 13.7 X 17.5 for everyday activities that include slalom (34 MPH), wakeboard (22MHP) and surf (10 MPH). And then, get a ďballast propĒ from OJ. 14.25 X 14.5 or the 14.75 X 15.5. Eric says that the ideal situation is to go with two props if I donít mind changing. If I want a good all round prop then go for the 14.75 X 15.5.

So, based on all of the feedback Iíve seen on the site it appears that folks STRONGLY prefer the 14.75 X 15.5 to the 13.7 X 17 (or 17.5). My question is whether there is any draw back of just picking the 14.75 over the 13.7 for a good all round prop. What I donít get from these posts is how the 14.75 will affect my top end and slalom ability (pull and wake) as compared to my 14 X 20. Itís clear that the 14.75 appears to be better than the 13.7 for ballast hole shot. But when looking for a good all round prop this is a key attribute for me.

There is a used 13.7 for sale in the market for less than Ĺ the price of a new 14.75 so I need to rationalize my decision quickly. However, itís not all about price. If the 14.75 is definitively the way to go then there is no use to move forward with the 13.7. I just need some input to help me decide. Eric has been great in offering to allow me to try both of his props to see for myself but again the primary decision right now is whether to pass on the used 13.7.

TMCNo1, I have called Eric a couple of times but I hate to keep bugging him over these details. Especially if it results in me buying a used prop. I think it's a given that the 13.7 won't meet my ballasted / loaded needs so ultimately I'll be buying a prop from him either way.

Pm at you.

Plus, now after reading your post I think the 14.75 X 15.5 is the prop for you. (I assume you have the 330 hp engine?) Mine works great on my '05 X-star MCX. My top speed is 41-42, yours should be a couple ticks more.
I don't think the 13.7 X 17.5 will perform very well at all with 12 people PLUS alot of ballast weight. Your boat should hold speed better with that prop for wakeboarding and surfing too.

BIG PROPS TO ERIC @ OJ. He is great to deal with. He let me try my prop before buying too.

NJskiier, I only have the 310HP (yeah I know)...

I saw several of your posts about your prop selection and I appreciate your input and PM. I do a fair bit of crusing comapred to actual boarding with ballast. That's the only reason I was considering the 13.7. It may give me better top end than the 15.7 but I'll still have serious issues with ballast (310hp) so the 15.7 is probably still a requirement. Have you done any slalom witht he 15.7? What RPM do you see at 34 MPH?
