View Full Version : Does anyone tow with a newer Toyota Tacoma??
I have never towed a Mastercraft, and im looking on towing an X1 from Atlanta to Toronto.
The truck is a 2008 Tacoma V6, 6 speed manual with the towing package, they say it is good for 6500lbs.

No sweat.
I pulled our 2005 X2 (same as your boat) with my 2006 6 speed manual 4.0L Tacoma with ease. I now tow our 2008 X-star with it as well. The tacoma is a towing beast for its size.
As always, be aware that the boat and trailer weight is close to the trucks weight and this will affect emergency handling.

Factory brake pad material is usually more than adequate for most driving needs. When pulling a heavy load, they are sometimes not adequate to perform a 2nd or 3rd panic stop. No one wants to feel mush when you need to stop in a hurry, so I would strongly recommend replacing the brake pads with some aftermarket high quality brake pads. A good semi-metallic pad will continue to perform even after repeated hard braking.
No sweat.

That's great to hear, how is the fuel milage while towing?
Thanks!

I run around 13 to 14 MPG. I typically stay at 65 to 70 MPH. I do have to down shift to 5th whenever there is an uphill grade, and if it is significant, maybe even 4th gear with my X-star.
With the lighter X1 compared to my X-star, you should be able to stay in 5th to 6th gear 99% of the time.
I do not remember what year MC finally went from a 5 pin straight trailer electrical plug to the round plug, but make sure you have the correct receptacle on your Tacoma.

I appreciate your input! Now I can better calculate the cost on driving home with the boat.
My truck has the round style with the spring loaded flap, under the bumper.

I hope it goes well.
Most trailer supply merchants sell the round to 5 pin adapters if the X1 trailer has the old 5 pin style electrical connection.

I pull my 1999 x-star with single axle trailer with a 2003 tacoma with a V-6, and AUto transmission.
It does good.
I get about 10 miles to the gallon when pulling.
I do not pull in Overdrive.

I don't know the weight of your 08 x-star,but my 08 x-30 strains my 08 4x4 tacoma way to much. It is ok for short trips to a local spot but the long treks no way.

I think the X-30 does weigh more. I would have to check the specs. But, our X-star and double trailer list around 6000lbs. We certainly are not going to set any speed records reaching highway speeds, but the truck has no apparent problems. We tow a few hundred miles at 65 - 70 mph with not much starting and stopping. I will even pass folks on the highway on level grade without much issue.
Certainly if their were numerous steep grades or constant starting and stopping, the Tacoma would likely not be as happy.
Does your Tacoma have the trailering package (tranny cooler and stiffer suspension)? I assume you have the 4.0L V6. I do not think they changed the Tacoma V6 between 2006 and 2008, but perhaps newer emission regulations have lowered torque or HP in the 08s. The six speed manual in my 06 is also geared relatively low as it pulls > 2500rpm to do 70 mph with no cargo or trailer.
