I just got back from a 2400 mile round trip from TX to NC and put my ( new to me) 85 S&S in the water only to find out that the mother was overheating!!!!!!!!

My first thought was to get on here and get some help! Nothing worse that a trip from hell for a broken *** boat! But, thats the way it goes sometimes.

I replaced the impeller ( it was horrible) and backflushed all the lines and pulled all the impeller parts out of the hose..transmission cooler and so on.

Still...take it to the lake and absolutely no water going through the engne...managed to chew up 2 impellers @ $20.00 a pop and it started to get to me!

I broke down and took it to the shop and the mechanic said it was the hose collapsing once the engine starts. They wated $400 to replace the hoses in the boat...I quickly told them to go to hell.

I Paid $50 for new hoses at a specialty hose shop and replaced every hose on the entire cooling system, put in another new impeller.

I fired it up last night after 3 LONG days of a new boat that is giving me problems...not to mention I just paid $8500 for it. :eek3:

It ran great with the waterhose hooked up in the driveway. The lake was closed off last night so I could not see if it will actually be pumpng water..that is still yet to be determined.

The only part I havent replaced would be the Sherwood pump itself..which I need to replace anyway just for some piece of mind.

Just wanted to vent a little.... :(

Any leads for sherwood pump on a 351 Ford Windsor ?

Thanks,
Liquid

Sorry to hear about your overheating issues. Sounds like you did a pretty good job tracking down the issues....but why would the hose be collapsed without another issue..ie the raw pump being bad or the internal water pump?

www.skidim.com is a pretty good resource for all inboard parts.

I have no Idea..totally New to working on inboards or any engine for that matter..but I've just followed the instructions of the mechanic.

They charged me $100 just to tell me I had bad hoses...if it doesnt work properly in the water..I will be pissed.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck. It sounds like you got the problem fixed now.
Maybe there was something debris inside the hose up against the transmission oil cooler and suction from your pump was collapsing the hose. Did you check that? Dosent matter at this point if you replaced the hose.

Just reread you post. If you have impeller parts in the oil cooler, it sounds like the water pump is mounted backwards. Saw that done once.
The same motor was used on CC and it had opposite rotation an unknowing “mechanic” could have made a mistake. Check the pump.
When I got my new impeller this year from skidim, it had instructions on how to mount on LH and RH engines.

Yeah, I was told to pay attention to the way it was mounted on to insure it wasnt on backwards and pumps water in instead of out.

I have a 1974 mastercraft with a 351. The hoses began to collapse on ignition, and the engine dies. To fix this I first changed the sherwood impeller and then check the passages for rubber chunks. I then changed the water pump and the thermostat. I have now changed the hoses except the 3" hoses off the exhaust manifold. the waterjackets still suck down. what could it be?
