Here's how we spent part of the day. Air temp 23 degrees and wind chill felt like 13 degrees. This is Rick.

You're welcome. I had to stop for a few minutes to let an electrician in. This is over by the boat launch. The lake had been covered with a layer of ice 2 days earlier. The power plant released just enough warm water to get the temp up to 33 so there was a big enough opening to ski.

It was so icy at the launch it took two trucks and a bunch of guys pushing to get the boat out of the water.

The boat had a layer of ice on the sides and a runny nose at the front. :)

Here is a link (http://www.fox17online.com/news/fox17-winter-weather-water-skiers,0,6219376.story) to a story that was on the news.

That should do it for New Year's Day pics.

I always enjoy your photos Sue. These make me feel a little guilty though. I live in the South and kept thinking how cold it was every time I went out on the deck to get another log for the fire. Thanks for sharing!

Sue Great shots...do you utilize that event as a fund raiser?

I pulled my son John New Years Day here in Tampa

A little warmer here. Low 50s on NYD

Will try to get those photos up. Folks on the lake thought he was nuts

Sue,

Great to see you guys got some local media coverage. I am surprised you were able to find open water as cold as it has been.

Thanks for posting the pics and Happy New Year to you and Rick.

according to the guys in my family, things hurt at first then they go numb and you don't feel them so the pain goes away.

Great pics guys, wish we could ski up here. The only way we can ski here is behind our four wheelers, trucks or sleds, or hit the ski slopes. Counting down the days for our vacation to Florida. Hope to stop in and see Jim and the guys at BAWS.

Port Sheldon. It is a small harbor in Pigeon Lake connected to Lake Michigan by an entrance channel protected by two piers marked at the outer end by a private light. The primary purpose of the channel is to provide cooling water for the power plant on the north side of the lake. The power plant's warm water discharge is just barely enough to keep the water open enough to ski. You look out for ice chunks just like you'd watch out for wood in a river.

That reminds me of the Polar Bear Plunge in Milwaukee. Every New Year, everyone lines the shores of Lake Michigan and jumps in. I did it last year, but I'll tell ya, I'd rather be skiing.

Great Pics Sue!

great pics, im in SE michigan and everything is frozen besides by the powerplants. Maybe next time salt the ramp some to allow the trucks better traction. I hope you had a heated garage to take your boat to asap and get her warmed up and winterized. She looks cold..

Winterizing takes place at the boat launch while the engine is still warm. The owner does a really good clean-up when he gets home to get the road salt off the boat and trailer.

I saw that news cast report and saw Tim Priest... he is a great guy! I didn't know Tim was the organizer of this annual event. I may have to come out there next year and get wet. The cold won't bother me. I see Tim still wears those funky 80's sunglasses  and he still has an old Mapple Siege ski too.... I loved that old Mapple Siege ski... it rode deep in the water and threw a hell of a wall of water. ( a little slow across the wakes however ;)
