View Full Version : Gelcoat Cracks?
We went out to the lake today. Had a great time. Pulled the boat out and while drying it off I discovered what I think are cracks in the gelcoat. They are on the deck between the air vent and the middle of windshield. At first I thought they were just water marks. But, they would not rub out. I can even feel them with my finger. Anyone on here had gelcoat cracks in a new boat? What do they look like? Pictures? What do we do now? Do I contact the dealer? Go straight to MasterCraft? How do they fix it? Thank you for any help. :)

Is your boat still under warranty? If so, take to the dealer that shouldn't happen...
Post some pictures

It better be under warranty. It is a 2005. We have only had it for 2 1/2 months. I will take some to post tomorrow morning. We did not get back from the lake til after dark.

Sorry, with so many people posting pics of there boats and what not it is had to keep them all straight.
If you do a search on here, you should come up with a bunch of different threads on similar experiences. Everything from minor repairs at the dealer all the way to new hulls and the boats being sent back to the factory.
I would call the dealer TOMORROW to let them know your findings so that they can be prepared to fix the problem immediately.
We tried taking pictures of it this morning. They did not turn out to well. On the picture that I have posted you can barely see the 2 cracks that run from the vent down to the black. Those are 3-4 inches long. There is a section about 3 ft long that is full of them. :( I'm waiting for the dealer to open so I can call and get some info from them.

Just out of curiousity, can you snap a photo of just the general area that isn't specifically zoomed in on the cracks. Just to get a better idea of where it is exactly.

go back to your dealer....its what i did with my 2004 X9....i had a spidersweb crack on my rear-quarter(ouch,i hear you say).....they fixed it in no time when the correct gel coat turned yup from the states..you can not tell it was even repaired.....dont worry ,you'll be fine...it was all repaired under warranty...i think its getting more common all the time with the new gel coats as they cannot put enuff "plasticizer"(guess) into it

How long did the fixing take? Am I going to be without a boat for part of the summer?
I talked to my dealer this morning (9:00am) and asked some questions. He said he would get back to me in a minute. By 5:00pm hadn't heard back so I called again. He told me to call someone else and that person told me to wait til monday and call the service dept. Grrrr. I just want to know what the process is. Maybe I am being to impatient.

Needs to be done in the summer. It takes a month of warm summer air to cure the gel correctly.
Just kidding. Depending on how much has to be done, should be only few days at most. Ask for a reference and call them to see.

Check previous posts. I also sent you a PM. Sorry to hear about your problem. Dealer should be able to take care of it. I can see the cracks, but I know what I am looking at from previous experience.

fixing was done over the week....dropped it off on saturday ,picked it up the next
Thanks guys for the replies and info. I finally spoke with the service department (after 3 non-returned calls :( ) and will be emailing them pictures of the cracks. After getting the go ahead from MasterCraft they will be fixing it at the end of the season. Whew. I freaked out just a little bit, sorry. :o Again, thanks for the replies.

Glad to hear it turned out ok. Be sure to keep an eye on the cracks and for other cracks that may pop up.

We have two cracks stemming from the right rear pop up cleat, spoke with the dealer about it and they said it will be a good project for them over the winter. (They didn't call Mastercraft. They made it sound like it was a common factory problem.) We also had a long heat mark on the left side that was already taken care of.....
The dealer said they have to get approval from MasterCraft first before they will fix the cracks. We are waiting til the end of the season (per dealer request) before we go any further with getting the cracks fixed.
Since it is only the end of August we still have 2 more months or ride time. :)
By the way they are getting bigger and you can feel all of them now when you run your hand over the gel coat. Kinda makes me ill everytime I do that too. :(

I better go check to make sure ours aren't spreading. You would think the dealer would love doing them, b/c I'm sure Mastercraft pays them to do it, being a factory problem and all....
I just put on the aluminum vent guards, two for the front and one for where the blower exhaust comes out. Regret it now, b/c they're a waste of money, but we had to drill through the gelcoat. That made me pretty sick....

We have talked about getting the aluminum vent covers too. If they involve drilling into the gel coat its probably not gonna happen. I just can't stomach that. :o
Have you gotten the tower rack conversion kit to hold your ski?
:)

No, not yet. Haven't thought about it. More demand for boards I guess. Usually they're pretty full of boards and a surfboard and we store the ski's in the rear port side storage area. I looked at your pics closer, looks pretty nice....

We had some with an 02 X9 in the walk thru on the way to the bow ... the dealer fixed it in the winter and you could not even tell where it was
We had some chipping on the 04 X-star on the hull and it was fixed last winter.
In both cases we just showed the boat to the dealer and they took a couple dig. pictures and just set it up for the winter time when the shop was slow.
